Hello, new to this forum.
I struggle to get sound out of my Windows Server 2012 installation.
The speaker icon has an X on it, clicking it does nothing.
There is a "primary system device" with a warning in device manager.
is there any fix to the sound issue?
Thanks.
Windows Server 2012, no sound.

The default audio device for the Server 2012 template is:
Host driver: Default
Controller: Intel HD Audio
Is that the setting for your VM?
Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.
Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. In the "Logs" subfolder, zip the VM's "vbox.log", and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Yes, that was the log, good. The questions above the request for the log were important, too.
Your log shows that your VM is not using the correct default audio settings. The default for Server 2012 is Intel HD Audio, yours is set to ICH AC97.

Good to know, how to change it so it works?

Shut down the VM from within the Server 2012 OS.
Go to the VM's settings, Audio tab, set thusly:
