Aborted issue on Win XP VM

Post by Luis_C »

Hi, I restarted my pc yesterday and now my VM won't start. It was running fine before that. I don't know what I did.

The posted log shows a VM running for 80 hours:
80:07:52.072665 Console: Machine state changed to 'PoweredOff'
Rather better than not starting. :D

No hardening errors, btw, that's good.

What is the VM doing now? Showing a Virtualbox error message? Also try going back to 6.1.40 and see if that knocks things loose.

The log is showing these things:
17:47:58.142724 PIIX3 ATA: Ctl#0: RESET, DevSel=0 AIOIf=0 CmdIf0=0xca (9533055 usec ago) CmdIf1=0x00 (-1 usec ago)
17:51:37.978457 PIIX3 ATA: execution time for ATA command 0xca was 229 seconds
17:51:37.979929 TM: Giving up catch-up attempt at a 219 839 825 959 ns lag;
Does "won't start" mean it seizes up every so often? Is the VM stored on a host spinning-platter drive (not an SSD)? I wonder if a host CHKDSK might help.

I think you didn't compare the 2nd log message with the date of the OP: ;)

Ah, yes, good point!

I'll guess that whatever issue the VM demonstrates is happening before logs start, then.

Luis, please report exactly what happens when you start the VM.

It is hosted on my HDD

so I open Virtualbox, hit start, a window opens and a black screen appears, about 5 seconds later it closes and i get a message:

"The VM session was aborted
Result code: E_FAIL (0X80004005)
Component: SessionMachine
Interface: ISession {c0447716-ff5a-4795-b57a-ecd5fffa18a4}"

I tried recovering some files from the .VDI with 7zip but it didn't work. I get an error:

"0.ntfs
Cannot open the file as [NTFS] archive"

I am able to open up other VDI files from my other machines. I had previously saved my machine in an .OVA earlier this year and i am able to get that machine up and running. however, there are some
files I would like to recover from the aborted machine.
