VBox 7.0.4 Random freezes Widows 11
VBox 7.0.4 Random freezes Widows 11
I have installed Virtual Box 7.0.4 on a Windows 10 22H2 x64 laptop. I then installed Windows 11 25247 on Virtual Box, but I am getting random freezes (during installation and during going through Settings menus) that can only be overcome with a client restart.
One consistent freeze is when checking activation: Settings --> System --> Activation !!

Did you install "VirtualBox Extension Pack"?
Try to uninstall it or downgrade to a 6.x.x version of the pack.

Uninstalling Guest Additions seems to stop the freezes, and yes, Extension Pack is installed.

Oooops... my mistake... i just mean "Additions Pack", not "Extension Pack"Simple07 wrote:Uninstalling Guest Additions seems to stop the freezes, and yes, Extension Pack is installed.
I read many forums for this issue, and already experienced it, i also downgrade the pack from here: https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.1.40/ .
Re: VBox 7.0.4 Random freezes Widows 11
I need the TPM support for Windows 11 for testing. I know I can by pass it, but I got a disastrous outcome once; when I cleared the TPM from the BIOS.
However, I installed the VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.41-154508.iso instead and it seems to be working fine (to date!)

Re: VBox 7.0.4 Random freezes Widows 11
Strange, for me, when I installed version 7.0.2, I was still able to use all of the VMs created from version 6. But as soon as I make a snapshot or a clone, then it would randomly freeze when I am in the VM. It is Windows 11 21H2. So much has happened, I decided to uninstall version 7 and went back to version 6. So far, it is stable again and has not freeze yet.
Verbal, so is the Guest Additions causing the freeze? Thanks for sharing.

Seems to be so ... since when i downgraded the Guest Additions from 7.0.x to 6.1.40, i had no more freezes.VirtualBox_2019 wrote:Verbal, so is the Guest Additions causing the freeze? Thanks for sharing.

I get this freeze when I try Uninstalling the Guest Additions. But I did not notice the other issues during operation; yet!!

Force a VM stop, and restart. The Addon is now uninstalled.Simple07 wrote:I get this freeze when I try Uninstalling the Guest Additions. But I did not notice the other issues during operation; yet!!
Re: VBox 7.0.4 Random freezes Widows 11
I am hoping the Developers see at what state the issue happens and make sense of it.
Any way,
When trying VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.40-154048.iso and VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.41-154508.iso, I get the issue in screenshot.
When I try VBoxGuestAdditions_7.0.4-154605.iso or VBoxGuestAdditions_7.0.3-154502.iso; all hell breaks loose..
Also, I tried PIIX3 and ICH9 Chipset; the same result. I have it set to ICH9 (knowing that it is experimental).
I'll stay on VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.41-154508.iso for the time being..
Just a passing note: I am running similar systems on VMware Workstation Pro 17.0 (nice new TPM functionality), it seems a little faster than Virtual Box. Usually Virtual Box is a little slicker than VMware Workstation Pro 16.0. At least in my experience.
p.s. VMware Workstation Pro 17.0 is not without problems either, it corrupted a VM while upgrading its compatibility from v16 to v17. VMware take a long time before releasing updates.

Re: VBox 7.0.4 Random freezes Widows 11
I am now getting random freezes in a Windows 11 guest under 7.0.4 on a Windows 10 host. All was stable for a longish time with the guest running Windows 10 under 7.0.1, then I made these changes:
I am going to back some of those changes out to see if the freezing stops.
Edit: I restored the network adapter to Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop, and I can now copy that ISO file to the external disk with no freezes, still under VB 7.0.4 (repeated half a dozen times to make sure). So the virtio-net driver seems to have been the cause there, although why a network adapter should affect a disk-to-disk file copy, I don't know. Now I just need to wait to see if any more of the random freezes still happen.
2nd edit: The freezes did come back with Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop, so it was not the virtio-net driver causing it.
- Upgraded the guest to to Windows 11. That ran with no issues for a few days.
- Upgraded VB to 7.0.4.
- Changed the pointing device setting from PS/2 Mouse back to USB Tablet (that had previously been changed as a workaround for a multi-monitor problem, issue #21137, fixed in 7.0.4).
- Changed the network adapter from Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop to virtio-net (in an attempt to get Memory Integrity working in Windows 11).

I am still seeing these occasional freezes with VirtualBox 7.0.6.

Re: VBox 7.0.4 Random freezes Widows 11
Turns out downgrading Guest Additions to 6.1.something only prevents 3D acceleration from running, and 3D is where the problem may be. The devs need more data.
For problems with 7.0 graphics or VM seize-ups when 3D is on:
Please upgrade to 7.0.6 Virtualbox, Extension Pack if used, and Guest Additions.
If this does not get a stable VM, and you have 3D acceleration turned on, try running the VM with 3D acceleration turned off. If that stabilizes the VM, please note that this happened.
Please create a ticket in the Bugtracker with the problem description, the manufacturer and model of the host PC's graphics card, the graphics driver version (on the host OS), and a (zipped) VBox.log file.
Locking so we all go to the Bugtracker with issues. Feel free to start your own new topic if further questions or problems appear.
