Windows host, Windows guest, BitTorrent, Frequent BSOD

Running the current released version of VirtualBox 6.1.36r152435 on a i7 4790 with 32G of RAM. Windows 10 is up to date on the host and in the guest. The guest is exposed to BitTorrent traffic and is running https://www.qbittorrent.org/ most recent release based on QT6. Connection to the host is always over a Windows Remote Desktop session.

Unclear precisely what is the cause, but the machine gets a variety of different BSOD's on an almost daily basis. If I do not run VirtualBox on the machine, the BSODs do not occur... do it definitely appears to be somehow caused by VirtualBox.
ONE THING to note, if it matters, is that the "machine files" as well as the .VDI file are both over the network on a \\NAS\VirtualMachine share. Also the torrents are being written to the same NAS through a share in VM mapped to drive T: at \\NAS\Torrents

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Get the VM OS logged into the desktop, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Does the host BSOD if you don't run the BitTorrent client in the VM?

Does the host BSOD if you don't MSRDP into the host OS while the VM is running?

Okay, sorry for the long delay in response. I have been trying many things to see if I could make any change or improvement, but no luck.

I have updated to the latest VB for Sept, including updating the Guest add in. I've changed the VM's allocated RAM from 4G to 8G. I've tried restricting this problem VM to being the only one running (usually I run two at once.)

No.
If I launch the VM and don't have it do anything but sit there, everything is fine.... no BSODs. It definitely seems related to the BitTorrent traffic.

That's not really a possible use case for me. The machine is otherwise headless.

I have attached the requested log file, as well as the record of BSODs since. (There are MANY.)
There would be more, but I can only spend so much time attending to the machine. There is also an additional bug, which I will mention below, which slows me down.


The additional bug: When the machine is not properly shut down, because of the BSOD, there much be some long lasting UNC network lock. When I recover the machine and attempt to restart the VM, it will give me an error about the machine not starting. It doesn't get to the EFI boot screen... so it's something related to loading the machine state I assume. In any case, I can either go reboot my NAS (not happening normally) or I can wait for a long time. (Like an hour or more.)

I'm not skilled enough to understand the bug checks, will have to leave that for the gurus. But in a few of them that I looked at, before my eyes glazed over :lol: , I saw mentions of memory corruption. Maybe a red herring, but you could try an intensive memory test on the host.

The log of the VM doesn't look like anything is wrong in the VM's 'hardware'.

Let's see if we can make it a use case temporarily. Please attach a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the host for a day or three, and don't RDP in. Reason is that MSRDP is tied more deeply into the user account than 3rd-party remote softwares, and Virtualbox also runs strongly in the user account space. Logging in and off through MSRDP has been known to up-end Virtualbox.

Yeah I had considered that too, but the fact that the machine runs completely find with other VMs and on it's own kinda ruled that out for me. I think the bug is actual a VirtualBox driver over-writing kernel memory and then the kernel freaking out because of it. I have a friend, who on the opposite coast, who had to abandon VB because his machine was also made unstable in a similar fashion. I don't know his precise use case, but I suspect it to be similar... heavy traffic into the machine and use of shared network on a NAS. Unclear if the bug might be in the network drivers or in the file sharing code, as both are being stressed pretty hard together in my use case.

Okay, well I have a PiKVM that is currently driving a different machine, which I could temporarily decommission, so I guess I could attempt to set that up. It will be hard to avoid the habit of using RDP, but I will adapt. ;)

Well, that may be more challenging to achieve. I never store files locally on my machines, so I don't have a lot of local storage, and Windows uses most of what's available. The local machine only has a 256G SSD and the VM is running on a [compressed] 256G VDI. I could "re-create" the VM using smaller size, but then we wouldn't be diagnosing the exact same VM/issue. I'll give this some more thought and see what I am able to come up with.

VMs do touch hardware that doesn't normally get touched, fwiw.

Compressed? How's that done? That could be an issue: Virtualbox VMs don't normally run compressed vdi's, and running on a compressed host drive adds further difficulty.

A USB 3 external drive could hold the VM drive temporarily as a test.

FWIW, all three types of BugCheck have in common that the function FsRtlSplitLocks() is involved, which belongs to the Windows File System Locking implementation. So my first guess would be that the NAS plays a vital role.

Okay, I have to apologize again, I guess. I ran the Beta 3 of MemTest+ and it seems to be reporting issues. Looks like a stuck bit. Since this machine has DDR3, it probably not feasible to get a reasonable replacement, so I guess I will need to replace the machine.

I really do have to wonder how a machine could run at all with such problem... I presume it must be in higher memory where booting the machine doesn't manage to access the memory until it's been running for some time. I will let this thread go dormant, and refer back to it if the same issue(s) reoccur when I get a new VM on a new machine set up.

Sorry to have wasted anyone's time... next time (if one) I will keep my MemTest USB stick handy and run it first.

Probably the wrong choice of word. When you create a VDI you can select the option to either pre-allocate the full size, or let it grow as needed. I was referring to the latter... the guest is not using all of the 256G allocated so the VDI file is smaller than 256G because unused blocks are not allocated. I guess that's not really compressed... more like "TRIM"med I guess.

Ah, gotcha. That's what Virtualbox calls a "dynamic" drive, it starts off small and gets bigger as data is dumped in, up to the size limit of the drive file.

Ooooh, that's a bummer. Fwiw I'd try some other versions of Memtest or other apps, just to be sure it's not a bug in the Beta.

That's a possibility. Many PCs might not fill up all the RAM on most occasions.

One thing you could test is if you put the VM on a different host PC and check what happens there.

Also please note fth0's thought above: maybe it's not a bad RAM stick and taking the VM off the NAS might help.

Other than the Windows 10 inside the guest seeking re-activation because of the change, everything else seems to be working fine and the BSODs have stopped. (It's only been 12 hours or so, but it looks like maybe it was bad RAM after all.)

If you move the VM Folder containing the .vbox file also, the VM OS very likely won't ask for reactivation. Moving the drive while not reusing the old .vbox file is like moving a physical drive to a different PC. The new .vbox file is like a new motherboard, which kicks off reactivation.
