VM's not starting after updating to 6.1.36

Post by darzu »

Hello,

today i wanted to try out something on a vm, when i started the virtualbox it made the update to the latest version 6.1.36 and after setting up the the vm i was thinking something with the setup was wrong.
What i figured out that none of my vm's are starting anymore. First i checked that Hyper-V is not installed (past experience), and also checked the log but i can't figure out what can be the issue.

the following error message appears for all of my vm's

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu 20 Desktop.

The virtual machine 'Ubuntu 20 Desktop' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code -2147483645 (0x80000003). More details may be available in 'C:\Users\ervin\VirtualBox VMs\Ubuntu 20 Desktop\Logs\VBoxHardening.log'.

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}
Please see the VBoxHardening.log attached

Thanks

The hardening log isn't attached, please try again. Zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

That is an unusual exit code, though. I'd wager some 3rd-party security software is interfering. You might not even have a hardening log.

Try uninstalling all non-Microsoft security software as a test, then uninstall and reinstall Virtualbox using right-click-Run-As-Administrator.

The log has an error confirming C:\WINDOWS\system32\Wintrust.dll, which is a Windows dll.

Try first to back up your computer. Then open the command prompt using right-click-Run-As-Administrator, then run sfc /scannow

You are right, sfc found some issue and repaired it but the Virtualbox vm's are still not starting, do i need to do something else?

Thanks

Looking at your log, it still seems to be failing on wintrust.dll It can see the file, but it can't verify the status.

516c.6824: supR3HardenedScreenImage/LdrLoadDll: cache hit (Unknown Status -22919 (0xffffa679)) on \Device\HarddiskVolume5\Windows\System32\wintrust.dll

516c.6824: Error (rc=0):

516c.6824: supR3HardenedMonitor_LdrLoadDll: returns rcNt=0xc0000190 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\Wintrust.dll'

Perhaps this helps, I'm having some similar trouble, I will post the log when I get a chance.

I've uninstalled 6.1.36 and rolled back to 6.1.34 as a workaround for the moment.

Do you have any other security software, banking software, web-safe-browsing software, etc, besides native Windows Defender?

I had Acronis installed and it had some security features but uninstalled it, now i thinking on the Nordvpn i had the Threat Protection activated till now, but i disabled it but the issue is still there. I have some other vpn client softwares also to connect to work and clients like Openvpn, Forticlient and Windscribe i dont know if any of them can be the issue.
Should i try to install older version of Virtualbox?

What version were you running before? If you can downgrade, especially to 6.1.34, and Virtualbox starts working, then back up to 6.1.36 and it stops again, then there could be something new getting in the way.

When changing versions up or down, use this procedure:

Uninstall Virtualbox and reboot.
Go to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers", look for any files called 'Vbox*.sys' (there could be up to 5) and delete them.
Reboot again.
If you have any 3rd-party security or anti-malware software, disable the living daylights out of it for a moment.
Reinstall Virtualbox using right-click-Run-As-Administrator.

Hello,

i am not able to resolve it, i had also uninstalled vpn services and Acronis from my system, after downgrading Virtualbox to a lower version still the same message shows up when trying to start a vm.
I am trying now other virtualization solutions, can't afford to reinstall Windows at the moment.

Will check back to the forum maybe someone points out a fix.

Thanks

The first is not the second. Did you try my suggested procedure?
