[Solved] Failed to enter Windows 7 setup

Post by yangshunhuai »

I created a Windows 7 VM with the default config and loaded a Windows 7 SP1 Simplified Chinese version iso into the optical drive. After "Starting Windows" and the windows logo disappeared, the VM stuck at a black page.

My configs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4600u
RAM: 16GB DDR4
OS: Windows 10 Home 21H2
VirtualBox: 6.1.34

Logs and config provided in the attachments.

For future reference, we do not need the entire VM. One VM log file is all we need. In fact uploading an entire VM was only possible because the VM disk is empty.

Anyway, the VM settings look ok to me. What doesn't look ok is the ISO, "cn_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677408.iso". That does not look like an official install DVD, so we have no reason to assume that it ever worked.

It is an official one. I have tested it on many machines and all of them can boot into the Windows setup.

Your log file shows these lines.

Code: Select all

00:00:02.620338 ********************* End of CFGM dump **********************
00:00:02.620421 HM: HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM: AMD-V is not available
00:00:02.659929 NEM: info: Found optional import WinHvPlatform.dll!WHvQueryGpaRangeDirtyBitmap.
This can cause all sorts of problems and has been discussed at length in this forum. I would try the install again after getting rid of the Windows hypervisor (unless you need Hyper-V or one of the other apps which require the hypervisor). Or you could try using the latest test build of VirtualBox.

Thanks for reporting back. For future reference, in fact it's unlikely the VM was stuck, it was just very slow because everything was having to go through a slow implementation of Hyper-v.
