Can't enumerate host usb devices Error shows up

Post by chilli10 »

I am now getting "Can't enumerate host usb devices" and unable to start any VM.
I am running windows 1a on a intel core i7 16GB RAM machine. VirtualBox 6.1.34 ran windows 10 host terribly slow and often crashes. Then I uninstalled it. Picked the latest development branch and installed 6.1.97. Since then I'm unable to start any VM even after installing the 6.1.34 stable version.
Only message I get is "Can't enumerate host usb devices".
Please help.

There are fixes for this. If you had an earlier version running before 6.1.34, go back to that version.

If 6.1.34 was your first dive into Virtualbox, go back to 6.1.34.

Uninstall Virtualbox and reboot.
Go to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers", look for any files called 'Vbox*.sys' (there could be up to 5) and delete them.
Reboot again.
If you have any 3rd-party security or anti-malware software, disable the living daylights out of it for a moment.
Reinstall Virtualbox using right-click-Run-As-Administrator.

If you still get the error message, remove all the USB devices except the wired keyboard and mouse. What happens then?

Thanks for the reply! I began on this computer with VirtualBox 6.1.34 . So, per your suggestions, I've uninstalled, removed the Vbox*.sys files from the System32\drivers directory and rebooted and then installed the same version of VirtualBox. It now loads the VM. However, it is so slow that it is not practical to use and after about 3 to 5 minutes, it crashes. I'm using virtual box in another computer which runs the guest OS smoothly.
I installed a new guest Windows10 VM here just moments ago which took several hours to complete installing. Same slowness and crashing issue continues.
Any help?

Curious on if you got this resolved or not.

Sorry, looks like we forgot about this topic.

Chilli10, if you're still having trouble, please post a vbox.log:

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. In the "Logs" subfolder, zip the VM's "vbox.log", and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Codeslayer2010, please describe your problem and provide a log in a new topic.
