I use the free version of Avast, and it shows the Anti-Rootkit Shield in the user interface. So I believe this feature is not limited to the paid version.

I am using free version of AVG: AVG AntiVirus Free, version 22.5.3235.

To anyone encountering this issue, Avast has issued an update which prevents this problem. See the following for a complete discussion:

As mentioned there, this update is not a long-term solution, but a temporary workaround. My system has been working with all shields enabled for over a day now. VMs are no longer crashing.
