[Solved] Can't run Win11 setup on Win7 host

Post by MammothMountain »

Hi

I made a new VM for Windows 11 using the default settings except for virtual disk size (used 30 GB) and tried to boot the ISO I downloaded from Microsoft's website on it. However, every time I start the setup it runs for a few seconds then produces a critical error. I've attached the log. I think the problem seems to have to do something with this line:
00:00:37.140997 IEM: wrmsr(0xc0000080,0x0`00000d00) -> #GP(0)
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Running v6.1.30 r148432 on Windows 7 SP1 x64 with 16GB RAM, guest gets 4GB RAM.

I don't know how to fix it, I'm here looking for info myself.
But according to MS you need 64+ GB storage so the first thing that comes to mind is you are trying to do this on a 30GB vdi.

My Win10 vdi is at 63.5GB (52.8 actual size) and the "check your hardware to see if win11 will run" tells me it won't.
So I guess I need to expand my vdi to something like 75GB.

Anyway, just a wild guess from the peanut gallery.

In fact Windows 11 will run with less memory. The check is only done at installation. Once you get it installed you can reduce the size again if memory is tight on the host.

The same applies to the other restrictions. My Windows 11 guest installed before the restrictions were enforced still operates normally although it fails several requirements (no UEFI, no TPM 2.0, insufficient memory and non-supported processor). It is not a supported by Microsoft setup but it works.

Running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host is no longer supported by VirtualBox either.

Thanks, enabling XD did the trick! :D Sorry, I meant to post this earlier but I had to restart my PC again and lost the window with the Virtualbox forum :oops:

@JonH @BillG I used the LabConfig workaround - link - you also need a third string, BypassCPUCheck. Gave it a really barebones conf with too little RAM, HDD, no TPM, and the host has an ancient CPU and it installed & works fine
