E_FAIL (0x80004005) after host PC hibernation in version 6.1.26

Post by Asper »

Hi,
after i woke up the host PC from hibernation, when I try to start a virtual machine than I get the following error:

Code: Select all

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows_10_Pro_LV_2018_SP1.
The VM session was aborted.
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: SessionMachine
Interface: ISession {c0447716-ff5a-4795-b57a-ecd5fffa18a4}
The error occurs before the VirtualBox logo appears in the launch screen of the virtual machine.
The error does not happen if the host PC is shutdown and restarted.
The error occurred after updating virtualbox to 6.1.26.

VirtualBox Graphical User Interface
Version 6.1.26 r145957 (Qt5.6.2)
Host OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Guest OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit or Windows 7 Pro 64bit

The VBox.log file is attached for checking.

Thanks a lot!

If you disable audio completely in the VM configuration (uncheck Settings > Audio > Enable Audio), can you still reproduce the crash?

I have just tried, I have disable the audio completely and the virtual machine start correctly!

For double checking, I have enabled the audio again and when I try to start a virtual machine I get the error E_FAIL (0x80004005).

fth0, thank you very much!

Which is the explanation?

At the present I don't need the audio, for me this is solved.

In case I need the audio again, is there a way to completely reset/shutdown VirtualBox without shutting down and restarting the host PC?

Thank a lot!

Please create a ticket in the Bugtracker and add your VBox.log file to it. I'll add my own investigation results then.

I have created the Ticket #20516 https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/20516.

I've added my investigation results to the ticket, but I do not know the answer to this question.

Up to now, you didn't say what you did before hibernating the host. Did you run VirtualBox before hibernating? Was it running during hibernating?

This is my working sequence:
  • I wake up the Windows 7 host after hibernation;
    I start the virtual machine, Windows 10 or Windows 7, from power down state;
    I work with the virtual machine;
    I shutdown/power off the virtual machine;
    I hibernate the Windows 7 host.
In synthesis, the virtual machine/s is/are always power off before to hibernate the Windows 7 host.

If you reboot the Windows 7 host, hibernate it before running any VirtualBox VM, wake it up and run a VirtualBox VM, does the crash also happen then? Or is running a VirtualBox VM before hibernating the host a necessary pre-condition for a crash when running a VirtualBox VM after waking it up?

I went through the path you suggest:
  • I have enabled the audio of the virtual machine;
    I have rebooted the Windows 7 host;
    I have hibernated the Windows 7 host without starting the virtual machine;
    I have wake up the Windows 7 host after hibernation;
    I have started the virtual machine, Windows 10 guest, from power down state;
    No error has come up, the virtual machine booted successfully with audio enabled.
