Unable to run on Windows 11 *HOST* (not guest)
Unable to run on Windows 11 *HOST* (not guest)
The Microsoft Feedback forum is abuzz about the fact that the Hyper-V role in the current builds of Windows 11 is apparently incompatible with VirtualBox. Again, I'm talking about running VirtualBox on a Windows 11 *HOST* (not guest OS)
However, I haven't heard a peep from this forum... I presume you guys are aware?

Re: Unable to run on Windows 11 *HOST* (not guest)
How is the situation different from VirtualBox on a Windows 10 host?

Re: Unable to run on Windows 11 *HOST* (not guest)
So far, Windows 11 is not a supported host OS yet, being still a Preview. Previews are never officially supported until the OS becomes the final release.
Virtualbox running on top of Hyper-V has been a goal since 6.0.0, and it is at a try-it-and-see-what-happens state now. The devs continue working on it, Microsoft keeps moving the goal posts, etc.

...you mean other than on Win10 it works, and on Win11 it doesn't?fth0 wrote:How is the situation different from VirtualBox on a Windows 10 host?
Attempting to launch a VM on a Win11 host with Hyper-V enabled generates an immediate error with VERR_NEM_VM_CREATE_FAILED. This does not occur in Win10 Hosts with Hyper-V enabled

VERR_NEM_VM_CREATE_FAILED: What do I do?
Also see HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active) for when Hyper-V allows Virtualbox to run but certain issues develop later.

Ok, I'll rephrase that: If you take a PC and create a fresh installation of Windows 10 21H1 and a fresh installation of Windows 11 Insider Preview, does VirtualBox behave differently on those two OSs? Don't fall in the trap considering updated PC installations, lest you're comparing apples to oranges, and many people do just that.

Indeed. It is always very easy to blame what is "new" for any problem you come across. In this case, the fix is exactly the same as it would be in Windows 10 (any recent version).

Got it... Yes, VirtualBox works when you disable Hyper-Vscottgus1 wrote:VERR_NEM_VM_CREATE_FAILED: What do I do?

However, I was just a little confused that nobody else was talking about this issue with Windows 11 on the VirtualBox forum
I was somehow hoping that some developer would say... "Thanks, we'll look into it"

Windows 11 is rather newly announced and available, and there are some discussions of it in the Windows Guests subforum. It will be coming up more, rest assured of that!
The devs are definitely on it.

Re: Unable to run on Windows 11 *HOST* (not guest)
I don't know if there are so many different things in Windows 11, but I noticed one interesting thing.
When I was running Windows 10 and had installed Virtualbox and then upgrade to Windows 11 it was possible to run Virtualbox on Windows 11, but in a fresh Windows 11 install it's not possible to install.

I think I've heard of folks installing Virtualbox on 11. Please start a new topic, and note that the Virtualbox installer is really a Microsoft program that works with the Windows MSI installer database. Google for how to enable MSI logging, then try the installation again. If it fails, please post the log as a zip file.

Re: Unable to run on Windows 11 *HOST* (not guest)
That is certainly news to me! I have been running VirtualBox on every version of Windows 11 from its first release to the latest without any problems.

I also can't install it on Windows 11. Just installed fresh Windows 11 on a compatible Laptop hardware.
"This app can not be executed on this PC".
Aside from Virtualbox everything is running on this pc already from my normal office needs to the complete adobe/office things.

All present and future posters who can't install Virtualbox on Windows 11, please note BillG's post above that running Virtualbox on 11 is possible.
Also please note that 11 is still in Preview status.
Please post your own separate topic in VirtualBox on Windows pre-releases.
Note that if you are having trouble installing Virtualbox, the Virtualbox installer is really a Microsoft program that works with the Windows MSI installer database. Google for how to enable MSI logging, then try the installation again. If it fails, please post the log as a zip file.
