I have an issue like this with a previously working 64 bit Ubuntu Mate guest vm on a Windows 10 host. I'm not able to get to a command line in the VM, but it boots up, and responds to the ACPI Shutdown Signal OK. This guest machine was working fine prior to the upgrade attempt. The bottom of the Mint GUI is visible on the 800x600 scaled display and seizes keyboard input from the host over and over, if you host+f to go fullscreen, you get a blank screen, and the log shows this over and over:
