VBoxHardening: Error relaunching VirtualBox VM process: 5

Post by ed_dd »

Hello,

I'm having problems starting any virtualBox Guest, I even tried different differnet virtualbox Versions (6.1.18,6.1.16, 5.2.44).
I tried to work through the Topic about VBoxHardening, Updated everything to the current leveln/ checked all Systemfiles (sfc /scannow ; dism /...) still can't start any Guest (even. an newly created / empty VM).
The VBoxHardening.log tells some Errors but from what I found in the forum those seen not relevant.

The Host OS is Win10 20H2 Patch Level yesterday.

The Error Message says:

Code: Select all

Virtualbox - Error in supR3HardenedWinReSpawn
Error relaunching VirtualBox VM process: 5
Command line: '60eaff78-4bdd-042d-2e72-669728efd737-suplib-3rdchild --comment "Konus neu" --startvm 39b43416-e50f-4eba-8d68-68c6fb5b5a50 --no-startvm-errormsgbox "--sup-hardening-log=C:\Users\ed_dd\VirtualBox VMs\Konus neu\Logs\VBoxHardening.log"'

please try reinstalling VirtualBox.

where: sup R3HardenedWinRsSpawn what: 5 VERR_INVALID_NAME (-104) - Invalid (malformed) file/path name.

Good on ya for finding and going through the Hardening tutorial!

The only thing that I see in the hardening log that shows the problem is the exit code 1. The log shows you have Kaspersky installed: you don't need it, you can run with Windows Defender active as a test. Try uninstalling Kaspersky.

The last paragraph in post 3 of the Hardening tutorial shows other things that can cause exit code 1's: these programs don't show in the log but do cause trouble: web-safe nanny software, Trusteer Rapport, HP ProtectTools, stuff like that. Try to think what such stuff might be on your computer and uninstall it.

Hi,
I'll try to uninstall Kaspersky to find if this is the Problem.
But i have two other Computers with exact same Windows / Kaspersky / Virtualbox Configuration and no Problems.
I found another Post of you telling that it may work if Kapersky is installed after Virtualbox, I'll test that too.
Best Regards

It worked after Kaspersky removal + virtualbox removal + reboot + virtualbox reinstall.
And it works with Kaspersky Installed after Virtualbox.

thank you for your help

Great! Glad your computer is working again.

Sometimes an uninstall and reinstall has been known to breed coexistence.

I have had the same problem for a long time,
virtulbox could have a simpler solution.
