Been successfully running a XP Pro SP3 guest VM on a Windows10 Home machine ( MSI laptop with a I7-7700) for 5+ years and previously on a older i5 5th gen on top of W7 Home for 4+ years
Trying to migrate the Guest VM to a new Windows11 Home Acer laptop (Acer with i5-11400H) but 100% CPU usage on all CPU cores assigned to VM, and random lockups.
I've done some searching, and have found reported issues with Hyper-V and a few other items, which I don't think apply to the home version of Windows 11
Question: Should I be able to run my Windows XP Pro SP3 guest on Windows 11 Home with a i5-11400H CPU? Or are my issues expected?
How I Migrated (and how I've done in the past on at least 5 machines)
- Fully Shutdown XP VM Guest
Ensured no pending snapshots in play for XP VM
Shutdown Virtual box host software (version 6.1.42r155177)
Copied VM folder (With Guest VHD & vbox files) to external drive
Installed same version of Virtual box and Extensions on new machine (version 6.1.42r155177)
Setup same matching VM pathing on new machine
Copied VM files from External drive to new machine (same location on both machines)
Started up Virtualbox admin
Added in VHD files into Media Manger
Added vbox in using machine/add option
Tweaked VM guest setting to use Network card
Start XP Guest VM and go into safe mode, which detects new devices, and then shutdown VM
Start XP Guest which would come up clean
Optional - Upgrade Virtual Box to latest version + Extensions
Optional - Update the Virtual Box Addons
Additional Details
- Initially tested with Virtual box 6.1.42 r 155177 and then with upgraded version 7.0.6 r 155176
XP VM used to run some older financial & development software which I've lost the registration keys & install media for (and Doesn't run well on newer OS).
Physical Touch pad buttons have broken on MSI laptop, so attempting to replace out the laptop
This is my 3rd (maybe 4th) attempt to swap the laptop. Was able to easily migrate the XP Guest VM on these machines (100% working); but decided against keeping the laptops due to issues such as super Crappy Touch pad, No physical ethernet support, unstable wifi causing machine to constantly dump, horrid battery life
