After upgrade to VB v7, VM on Win11 running very slow

Post by JJJones »

I have previously had a VM running WinXP on my Win11 computer. Ran great and fast.
Today, I upgraded to v7 [Version 7.0.6 r155176 (Qt5.15.2)] from the latest version of v6, and started my VM.
It took > 10mins where it usually takes 10secs to get the logon window. Then log on took a much longer time also.
I have disabled HyperVisor long ago and it still shows disabled.
Task Mgr shows that VirtualBoxVM is taking ~15% of the CPU consistently, and 3.8GB Ram out of 32GB Ram on the system.
Doing anything on the VM is very slow once logged on.

Any ideas? What more can I provide?

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. In the "Logs" subfolder, zip the VM's "vbox.log", and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions so you can find the "vbox.log", not "vbox.log.1", etc.)

You may not be using using Hyper-V virtual machines but something has evidently activated the Windows Hypervisor as the Log shows:
00:00:02.861905 HM: HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM: AMD-V is not available
00:00:02.905982 NEM: info: Found optional import WinHvPlatform.dll!WHvQueryGpaRangeDirtyBitmap.

00:00:02.906999 NEM: NEMR3Init: Snail execution mode is active!
00:00:02.906999 NEM: Note! VirtualBox is not able to run at its full potential in this execution mode.
00:00:02.906999 NEM: To see VirtualBox run at max speed you need to disable all Windows features
00:00:02.906999 NEM: making use of Hyper-V. That is a moving target, so google how and carefully
00:00:02.906999 NEM: consider the consequences of disabling these features.
You should also be seeing a Green Turtle icon amongst the VirtualBox icons on the XP Taskbar, which is the visible indicator that VirtualBox is having to use the Windows Hypervisor.

I suggest you work through this Guide: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=99390

Maybe start by checking whether 'Core Isolation/Memory Integrity'' is enabled in Windows Security Settings. The default setting used to be 'OFF' but not any longer.

Thanks Scottgus1 and multiOS. The steps mentioned by multiOS fixed the problem.

An update to Win11 must have occurred since I last ran VBox and my upgrade to v7 and the attempt to run VBox again. This update, I am guessing, is what changed things; as it was running just fine on Win11 prior to that. But I do remember having to go through these steps when I first got this Win11 box to get VBox going.

Thanks for confirming. Glad you're back up and running.

Watch out for that pesky Turtle!

After a recent Win11 upgrade "Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.3007)" my VM is back to running in Snail execution mode.

VBox.log is attached.

I have done the following:
1. Upgraded to the latest version V7.0.14r161095 - No Change
2. Did the following...
3. Find the Command Prompt icon, right click it and choose Run As Administrator.
4. Enter this commands:
bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off
DISM /Online /Disable-Feature:Microsoft-Hyper-V (Note: error did not find feature)
5. Enter this command:
shutdown -s -t 2
6. When the computer turns off, unplug it for 20 seconds. Then plug it in again and boot up again. (Some laptops have built-in
unremovable batteries. These devices may have a BIOS switch that can "deactivate" the battery, which could cause the unplug
needed for this step.)
PLEASE NOTE: These are the steps I took 1-2 years ago that resolved the problem then. It did not this time.

No Change.

What now? Thanks.

After re-reading the VBox.log file message concerning disabling ALL Hyper-V functionality in Windows, I followed the instructions and found these settings enabled.

I disabled Virtual Machine Platform, and rebooted. No Change.

The log file text is unchanged. Still stuck.
