update to 7.0.4 breaks Windows 10 guests
update to 7.0.4 breaks Windows 10 guests
I've always moved a Windows 10 guests between two servers running Windows-10 and VirtualBox 6.1.38; this is not working with 7.0.4
Two observations: on one host running the lastest update, a guest runs as expected, on the other after update, I get a crash.
Copying the guest from the host that faults with that guest, to the other host, results in operation as always expected.
The crash resulted in a guru file, that I have zipped and attached.
thoughts?

Can you please get a vbox.log from both hosts, for comparison?BDF wrote:on one host running the lastest update, a guest runs as expected, on the other after update, I get a crash.
Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.
Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. In the "Logs" subfolder, zip the VM's "vbox.log", and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.
Re: update to 7.0.4 breaks Windows 10 guests
I posted the zipped log from the machine that fails, not sure how to get the log from the non-failing machine.
Query: being new to forum, did my attachment make it in my original post? I don't see the attachment when I look now, so am wondering.

No logs were posted, unfortunately. See this place:
After you choose the file, click "Add the file".

Re: update to 7.0.4 breaks Windows 10 guests
Updated PastPerfect on that machine to version 7.0.4, started the guest, and as expected to faulted attempting to install it Extension Pack. Closed guest, collected log and compressed as 7.0.4Windows... and attached (Note: the file would not compress and meet conference size restriction, thust part 1of2 and part 2of2.
What am I missing here?
thanks,
Bruce

What is PastPerfect?BDF wrote:set PastPerfect ... Updated PastPerfect
The guru meditated over "VERR_VMM_RING0_ASSERTION", which seems to be known as, "something else tried to use the host's VT-x and took it away from Virtualbox without permission".
The logs seem to be both from the same host, or at least the same processor:

Re: update to 7.0.4 breaks Windows 10 guests
PastPerfect is an app that was not running, it has to be specifically started with a secure account (just verified, it indeed was NOT running) on 6.
The logs are from the same computer, as it turned out the issue of 7 hosted guest working on one machine and not the other was an unneccesarly complication, as we found out whan updating from 6 to 7 being sufficient to generate the failure on 7.

I'm not sure why it was mentioned, then? Unless, seeing that PastPerfect's version numbers are exactly the same as Virtualbox's, you actually meant:BDF wrote:Updated PastPerfect on that machine to version 7.0.4

OK, so merely updating to 7.0.4 causes the issue. I'd post this on the Bugtracker, with the zipped logs and a link back to this topic.BDF wrote: the issue of 7 hosted guest working on one machine and not the other was an unneccesarly complication, as we found out whan updating from 6 to 7 being sufficient to generate the failure on 7.

Re: update to 7.0.4 breaks Windows 10 guests
When creating a ticket in the Bugtracker, you could mention that your host CPU is so old that it doesn't provide EPT (Extended Page Tables), which is ubiquitous nowadays. In VirtualBox 7.0, development efforts were started to support Nested EPT, so I could imagine that VirtualBox 7.0.4 has issues on such old CPUs.
Re: update to 7.0.4 breaks Windows 10 guests
I upgraded from 6.1.28 to 7.0.4 on a Windows 11 host and attempting to start a Windows 10 guest is failing. The Windows 10 guest started without issue on 6.1.28. Two different Linux distro guests started without any issues on 7.0.4
I downgraded to 6.1.40 and the Windows 10 guest is starting without issue.
srtTrail.txt file on the Windows 10 guest reports the following:
Root cause found:
---------------------------
Unknown Bugcheck: Bugcheck 3b. Parameters = 0x80000003, 0xfffff8036028511c, 0xffffc98e045378a0, 0x0.
Repair action: System Restore
Result: Cancelled
I've attached vbox.log but it may not have the 7.0.4 event since the host is running on 6.1.40 now.
