Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 6.1.28 r147628 (Qt5.6.2) on Window 10:
I created an Ubuntu 20.04 server VM and it appears to be running ok, However creating a VM for Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 or 21.10 is slower than molasses as
it took about 115-20 mins to create the VM!
Then running Firefox takes about 30 seconds to come up. I never had this problem with previous versions of Vbox.
Also noticed when I try to browse to the server (Server IP = 192.168.1.22) the desktop is Unable to connect and is showing a different IP: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.33
I have no idea where this .33 IP is coming from?
Also I browse to http, but Firefox tries https which I do not have configured.
I can ping in both directions, Desktop to server and server to desktop.
I am using bridge adapter on both VM's.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Ray

Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
If you have been using an earlier version of Virtualbox and upgraded, please try downgrading again. 6.1.28 has a bug or two.
Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
Does that mean losing my current VM server? it took a lot to configure.scottgus1 wrote:If you have been using an earlier version of Virtualbox and upgraded, please try downgrading again. 6.1.28 has a bug or two.

Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
I down graded to 6.1.6 r137129scottgus1 wrote:If you have been using an earlier version of Virtualbox and upgraded, please try downgrading again. 6.1.28 has a bug or two.
I still have the same issue. Using bridge adapter.
Desktop VM IP=192.168.1.26
Server VM IP=192.168.1.22
I can ping in both directions.
But browsing to http://192.168.1.22 from the desktop returns:
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.33
The 192.168.1.33 IP has me confused!

Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
- Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.
Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log and the hardening log next to it, zip them, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. - Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. Zip the VM's .vbox file (not the .vbox-prev file), and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions if the folder that opens does not show a .vbox file.)
- In the Windows OS, open a Command Prompt and run ipconfig /all. Post the command output.
- In the Linux OS, open a Terminal and run ifconfig or ip address. Post the command output.

Instructions are a little ambiguous as I have 2 VM's. 1 Desktop and 1 Server.
Server ifconfig:

I can use putty and access the server but I am getting Network error: Connection refused when I try to putty to the Desktop VM?

Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
Hmm. So I guess that with two VMs, there'd be two of the logs, two .vbox files, and two ifconfigs, and the host ipconfig /all.Rayj2016 wrote:Instructions are a little ambiguous as I have 2 VM's. 1 Desktop and 1 Server.
So you've provided two logs, good. And one ifconfig.
There's the other ifconfig, the host ipconfig /all and the .vbox files missing.....

I nneded to install openSSH-server on the desktop VM. Here is the ifconfig:

Also, post the results of "ping" between the server and the desktop VMs.

Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
The network configuration looks correct to me in general, and since the ping also works, everything in and below the IP level is ok. The domain name part of the HTTP URL ("192.168.1.22" in your example) is either resolved locally or given to a DNS server to resolve, so this is the part to investigate IMHO. You can either use Wireshark or the Firefox Network Monitor (Ctrl-Shift-I, Network Monitor tab) to analyze this.
Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
Thanks for your help. This used to work in the past...ie: I used to be able to browse from the Desktop VM to the Web Server VM. I don't know what happened.fth0 wrote:The network configuration looks correct to me in general, and since the ping also works, everything in and below the IP level is ok. Re: Ubuntu Desktop VM Very Slow??
I have been noticing this as well not just in Ubuntu, but with every Linux distro. The boot text screen that used to fly by within seconds now takes almost a full minute to complete. Installations that took five minutes now take 40 minutes, and everything is just noticeably pokey.
I'm going to try going back to a version prior to 6.1.28 because the performance was way better. The only reason I upgraded to .28 was that I also had Hyper-V enabled and it refused to run with it enabled, and quite frankly I got tired of not being able to install many distros outside of Ubuntu/Debian and Fedora (namely Arch-based distros like Manjaro).
