Failed to load R0 Module (VERR_SVM_ILLEGAL_EFER_MSR)

Postby NotThomasNZ » 24. Oct 2021, 00:20

I've seen a lot of posts about the R0 module failing but nothing about my specific problem.
Basically, I've built a new computer with:
- MSI B550 A-PRO
- RYZEN 5600X
- Windows 10 Home so no Hyper V

In bios, I turned on SVM. In Task Manager, under the performance tab I see virtualization is Enabled.

When I open VirtualBox and attempt to start a session, this is what I get:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 10.

Failed to load R0 module C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox/VMMR0.r0: ModuleInit failed: -4051 (VERR_SVM_ILLEGAL_EFER_MSR).

Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SVM_ILLEGAL_EFER_MSR).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}

My version is: Version 6.1.28 r147628 and my extension pack is the same as well.

Any help would be appreciated

Not exactly true, BTW. Home can't run Hyper-V VMs, but it contains just about all the other Windows services that can use Hyper-V. Home hosts can have active Virtualbox-interfering Hyper-V. See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active).

Try a 'stone cold reboot' per this: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=103045#p501117

Great! Glad you're up and running.

Out of curiosity, was it Hyper-V or the cold boot?
