VBox Stopped Working on One PC

Post by gary271 »

Hi,
I have two PC's I use to run GeekXP and Linux Mint for a couple of specific (old) programs.
On my Intel i9-9900K machine, VBox works flawlessly for these
On my AMD Ryzen 9 3950X machine, it used to work also. A couple of weeks ago, all VM's failed to start (pre-existing ones or new ones, Linux or GeekXP)
The error is:
The virtual machine 'GeekXP' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005).
Result Code:
E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component:
MachineWrap
Interface:
IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the hardening log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

The posted log is the vbox.log, not the hardening log. And the vbox.log, dated from May 10, 2021, does not show any problems that I can see, in fact it seems to show a good run of the VM. Was the error a one-time problem? Or did you grab an old log?

Please try running the VM again, if it has the reported trouble, please load the hardening log.

Firstly, thanks for your help - it is much appreciated.

I just attempted a couple of times to start the VM, in each case I get the error reported below.

Then right click on the VM and choose "show log..." brings up the log viewer with tabs titled VBox.log, VBox.log.1,VBox.log.2,VBox.log.3

The header section of each log seems to show successful starting of the VM on the 10th or 6th of May. These dates correspond to the few days it worked after my update to Win10 20H2.

If I check the contents of these logs, nothing changes at my failed attempts to start the VM - no new logs are created and the existing logs are unchanged.

I don't see "hardening log" anywhere in the GUI - just Save, Find, Filter, Bookmark, Options & Refresh.

Maybe Windows is closing VBox before it has chance to create a new log ?

Windows Event Viewer shows this application error at each attempt to start the VM:

Faulting application name: VirtualBoxVM.exe, version: 6.1.22.44080, time stamp: 0x60898c77
Faulting module name: VirtualBoxVM.exe, version: 6.1.22.44080, time stamp: 0x60898c77
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000001511b
Faulting process id: 0xfac
Faulting application start time: 0x01d749ca24da8995
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBoxVM.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBoxVM.exe
Report Id: 12fb2ca9-578d-4572-8dbc-a6a29e7097d0
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

which indicates a memory access violation

It made me wonder if HW virtualization isn't working but it's enabled in the BIOS, and I tried cycling it off-then-on, resetting BIOS CMOS then turning on, and updating BIOS all to no avail. Also, I recall that this gave a specific error from VBox

Once again, thanks.

Thanks for taking another look. The hardening log ought to be between VBox.log and VBox.log.1. It appears that Virtualbox is keeling over before the hardening log is made. Sounds deeper than I am familiar with.

Please try following this tutorial, assuming Hyper-V is enabled. HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active) Your old log does not show this problem, but Hyper-V could have been switched on in the meantime.

Also see this one Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues for things that have caused hardening troubles in the past. Especially suspect 3rd-party security, antivirus, web-safe browsing & banking software, manufacturer bloatware like HP ProtectTools et al. Try uninstalling AV and running with native Windows Defender.

Thanks - I'll work my way through those resources.
My problem PC is at work, domain connected and partiality managed by our IT firm - I have no access to uninstall SentinelOne or even whitelist programs - I have a ticket in to get them to try both....
Appreciate your help - I'll post back if I make progress

Sounds good. Since it is a work computer, try to make a case with the boss that Virtualbox will help your work and the boss may got to bat with IT for you.
