Problem installing VirtualBox on Windows

Postby wengdashanren » 15. Apr 2021, 22:04

Hi,

When I try to run the installer on Windows, I ran into the following problem. Does anyone has any idea how to solve this problem? Thanks!

Can't post pictures so I will type the error msg below.
The path 'C:\Users\aura-\AppData\Local \Temp \VirtualBoxWirtualBox-6.0.22-r137980-MultiArch_amd64.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package VirtualBox-6.0.22-0 37980-MultiArch_amd64.msr in a folder from which you can install the product Oracle VM VirtualBox 6.0.22.

Your Windows MSI installer database has gone south.

1. Download the Windows Virtualbox version exe from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds
2. Make a temporary folder on you computer to hold the extracted files, like C:\VBOXMSI.
3. In a regular command prompt window, drag the downloaded exe file. The full path and file name of the exe will appear at the command prompt.
4. Type {space}--extract{space}--path{space}
5. Drag the temporary folder you made on the command window. The path and name of the folder will appear in the command window.
6. The command will look like this:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
drive:\path\to\VirtualBox-[versionnumber]-Win.exe --extract --path c:\VBOXMSI

The MSI will be in that temporary folder.

{space} means a single space character from the spacebar. Sorry to be pedantic, but some folks interpret this like the person who, when told to right-click the desktop, wrote 'click' on the top of the desk... :lol:

Note there's one annoying glitch with the installer. A message box which does not have an accompanying icon in the taskbar will display the results of the last command. If you leave this message box open, further runs of commands with the .exe file will not do anything. You will have to find the message box and close it. And if you minimize all the windows with the Desktop Peek tool you may not be able to find it to close it.

Thank you so much for your reply. I did what you said and a message box saying 'file extracted to the folder' pops up. Now there is a VirtualBox-6.1.18-r142142.msi in the temporary folder I created but nothing else happened. I clicked on the .msi file and encountered the same problem as before. What is the right next step?

You were supposed to have extracted the OLD msi, then put the file in the location indicated by your original "missing file" error message.
