bin mir etwas unklar, wie das in VirtalBox zusammenhängt zwischen den Ordnern, .ova Dateien, .vdi Dateien und dem‚Manager für virtuelle Medien‘.
Im ‚Manager für virtuelle Medien‘ wird mir eine Virtuelle Maschine nicht gezeigt, die ich in VirtualBox links im Fenster der Virtuellen Maschinen aber sehe, diese existiert auch tatsächlich. Woran kann das liegen?
Ich habe mehrere virtuelle Machschinen (.vdi), leider verstreut in vielen verschiedenen Verzeichnissen.Wenn ich nun eine virtuelle Maschine auf einem Computer auf ein neues Laufwerk und/oder in einen neuen Ordner verschieben möchte, wie mache ich das? Mit Appliance exportieren ( -> .ova) und dann am neuen Ort importieren?
Verstehe ich das richtig: Der Ort einer importierten .ova Datei hat nichts mit dem Ort der daraus entstehenden .vdi Datei zu tun?
Den Ordner der vdi Dateien kann ich mein dem ‚Manager für virtuelle Medien‘ sehen.
Und auch verändern?
Haben .ova Dateien einen Vorteil gegenüber .vdi Dateien, auch wenn man ausschließlich VirtualBox als Virtualisierungssoftware verwendet?
A .ova is a compressed folder containing a guest's virtual disk file(s) and a configuration file that tells a compatible hypervisor, like Virtualbox, VMware, and others, how to set the virtual machine and use the guest disk. The .ova is compatible with the OVF standard, which is discussed on Wikipedia. The .ova can be imported many times and the hypervisor will make new VMs out of it.
The .vdi is only the VM's virtual disk drive, in Virtualbox's proprietary format. Other common formats are .vmdk (VMware) and VHD, VHDx (Microsoft), and others. All of them are just the VM's virtual disk, nothing else. They are equivalent to just the hard drive in your computer. A .vdi virtual disk is not the VM, just the disk.
A whole Virtualbox VM is a folder containing the VM's .vbox file, a Logs folder, possibly a Snapshots folder, and optimally the VM's virtual disk file (.vdi, .vmdk, .vhd, etc, but not .ova). The .vbox is the 'recipe' for the VM. Think of the .vbox as the 'motherboard' of the VM.
The Virtual Media Manager is the window in Virtualbox that allows you to monitor, move and copy the virtual disk files. You can move a VM's disk file to another drive on your PC to improve data throughput if you have too many VMs on one drive. You can also move the drive file into the VM's folder along with the VM's .vbox file. All moving and copying of disk files should be done in the Media Manager, except in special circumstances.
If you right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, there is a Move command to let you move the whole VM folder to a different folder or disk. The best layout for a VM is to have the disk file in the VM folder along with the .vbox file. Then the path to the disk file in the .vbox file is relative, and the whole VM folder can be put on any capable Virtualbox host PC or Mac and run. If you need the VM on a different disk, move the whole VM to the new disk, not just the virtual disk file.
If your VM folder is on one drive and the VM's disk file is on another drive, use the right-click Move command in the VM list to move the VM folder to the folder containing the virtual disk file. Then use the Virtual Media Manager to move the virtual disk file into the VM folder next to the .vbox file.
Hopefully this is translatable, I don't know any German except for 'Achtung', as in U2's "Achtung Baby".
