kUbuntu 18.04 mit Gasterweiterungen unbrauchbar

Post by DieterH »

Hallo zusammen!

Ich brauche mal ein/zwei "Leitstrahlen" 8)

Host (immer noch) LUBUNTU 16.04
VirtualBox 5.2.10 r122088

Ich habe hier ein frisch installiertes kUbuntu 18.04. und möchte die
Gasterweiterungen installieren (build-essential vorher installiert).

Frage(n):
Wo kann ich unter Linux ein Logfile der Gasterweiterungen finden?
Gibt es aktuell bekannte Unverträglichkeiten?
Was kann ich evtl. noch kontrollieren?

Danke für eure Zeit!
Gruß

VirtualBox 5.2.10 r122088 ... I have a freshly installed kUbuntu 18.04 ... Are there currently known incompatibilities?
• VirtualBox 5.2.10 came out 2018-04-17.
• Ubuntu 18.04 came out on 2018-04-18.
Yes there should be incompatibilities. Definitely!

If you want to use the latest version for your host/guests, you should do the same for VirtualBox. Download the latest test builds. See if that works...

Hi socratis & all!

TNX for the quick response!
I'll give it a try tomorrow ... or should I wait for some more days?

What's about the logfiles? Are there any on Linux guests?
I'd like to find out what went wrong, and give some more info's to you.

Again: thanks for your support!

Well, VirtualBox was released on 2018-04-17, on everything except the largest user share: Windows. So the developers were really trying hard to solve a last minute problem, that prevented them from releasing the Win version. That happened on 2018-04-27, last Friday, right before the long 1/May weekend. So, there was not that much time to deal with anything else (pretty much). So, things will improve.

There are for all guests! Just right-click in the VM in VirtualBox Manager, Show Log. The last-run is "VBox.log", the run before that "VBox.log.1", etc. Unfortunately we haven't been "available" enough to write a FAQ on how to read the logs, so it might be difficult.
  • Gathering the necessary information:
    1. Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state).
    2. Observe the error.
    3. Shutdown the VM (not paused or saved complete shutdown, force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down, right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

Hi socratis

OOOPS! I should be more precise

In my Windows client I have under

"C:\Programme\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions\"

a file called "install_drivers.log" and I assumed something
similar on Linux. I'd like to review this file to see if there
is anything in, that wasn't displayed during the installation.

Oh, so you want the GAs installer log, not the VM log. Now I got you...

Well there are two things to look for. The first is the actual output of the installer in the Terminal. Example:
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 5.2.11 Guest Additions for Linux........
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version 5.1.26 of VirtualBox Guest Additions...
Copying additional installer modules ...
Installing additional modules ...
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules.
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Running kernel modules will not be replaced until the system is restarted
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Starting.
VirtualBox Guest Additions: modprobe vboxsf failed <--- This is NOT an error.
You may need to restart the Window System (or just restart the guest system)
to enable the Guest Additions.

Press Return to close this window...
The second is the complete log in "/var/log/vboxadd-setup.log". Do not get confused while reading it, the following is not an error, if you look closely it's an echo statement. Lots of people report it as an error:
test -e include/generated/autoconf.h -a -e include/config/auto.conf || (		\
echo >&2; \
echo >&2 " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \
echo >&2 " include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.";\
echo >&2 " Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.";	\
echo >&2 ; \
