Thanks for the screenshots. The picture showing the selection box only being able to select the .vdi file is odd. If it is the selection box that opens from the main Virtualbox window's Add button, it should be pointing at .vbox files. The Virtual Media Manager has an Add button whose selection box filters for disk files. Something is wrong on the host, either in the program or the procedure used in operating it.
The double-click of the .vbox file also registers the VM, doing the same as what selection box that opens from the main Virtualbox window's Add button is supposed to do. Your VM should be usable now.
