Memtest86 freezes in VirtualBox

Post by birdie »

I've filed a bug report here but since developers are busy with something else I'd like to ask if anyone has been successful in running Memtest86 8.4 under VirtualBox.

For me it hangs at:

Code: Select all

Retrieving CPU MSR data...
At this point the CPU usage is 100% and the test stalls.

"Guest OS type: 'WindowsNT_64'"
Did you test with other (more current) guest OS types?
Also the vbox.log attached to the bug report is not complete. It looks like it was taken when the guest was still active.

Yes. I just created a VM very similar to yours ("Other Windows (64-bit)", 4 GB RAM, AHCI + VMDK format) and it works as expected. If I provide only 64 MB RAM, it stalls at the CPU/cache/mem speed measurement (one output line earlier than in your case), but anything from 128 MB RAM upwards suffices. The main difference is the host CPU, being an Intel CPU in my case, and an AMD CPU in your case.
