TrueOS which graphiccontroller?

Post by FritzS »

I want to install TrueOS 18.03 in 6.0.4 r128413 (Qt5.6.3) - under Mac OS X ElCapitan.
Which graphic controller should I use? VMSVGA or VBoxSVGA or ...?
https://www.trueos.org/handbook/install.html

Which client extensions gives for TrueOS / FreeBSD?

TrueOS is based on FreeBSD.

PS: With LinuxMint I use VMSVGA, with Windows 10 VBoxSVGA
Nice greetings

I assume VMSVGA (which may not be fully stable yet) or VBoxVGA (the older graphics chipset emulation). Note however that neither FreeBSD nor TrueOS are supported guests, so the question may be moot. If you are relying on older, third party forks of the GAs then VBoxVGA is probably what it expects.

Sorry, I know nothing about TrueOS/BSD. Perhaps a TrueOS support forum would be a good place for that question.

According to the TrueOS website, the 18.03 is the "Unstable Legacy" one. Why did you choose 1) a legacy, 2) an unstable legacy?

How about we both you and me download TrueOS Stable (Current Release: 18.12) and take it from there? ;)

Thanks for the hint! :)
I downloaded TrueOS-Desktop-18.03-x64-DVD.iso for a while!
Now I would delete all VMs from TrueOS and install them new.

If I create an new empty VM for FreeBSD 64 the graphic controller is VBoxVGA without 2D or 3D acceleration,
controller IDE, PAE/NX deactivated, Nested Paging activated, no clipboard, no drag and drop - all this are the suggested settings from VirtualBox!

I had take a short message in Twitter to @trueos.org and @freebsd

I'm going to start with their proposed defaults from their website: 1.3.3. Creating a Virtual Machine for a TrueOS® install.

But that's at least 3+ hours away, their download speed is about 100 KB/s... :o

Graphics acceleration, clipboard, drag and drop, simple shared folders - these are all features of the Guest Additions which are provided for supported guests. Unfortunately, as already mentioned, TrueOS/FreeBSD is not a supported guest OS. I believe I've seen talk about third party ports of (some of) the GAs, but I won't swear to it.

My downloaded TrueOS-Desktop-18.03-x64-DVD.iso was in my opinion an stable
https://www.trueos.org/blog/trueos-stab ... 3-release/
I downloaded them from 'master' and not from 'unstable'
https://download.trueos.org/master/amd64/

It gives an other download path and here I found the needed md5 / sha256 files too
https://pkg.trueos.org/iso/18.12/

It gives an gnome stable too
https://pkg.trueos.org/iso/gnome-stable/

Did you notice the date on that blog entry? You should... ;)

After 5 hours of downloading, I discovered that I had a corrupt download. Back to zero...

I downloaded and installed them now - TrueOS is without GUI :o
$ freebsd-version 13.0-CURRENT
All of the packages needed for a fully functional server OS are included out of the box, and the installer makes it simple to set up TrueOS on your system. Desktop environments may be downloaded and installed via the package management (pkg) system. Download TrueOS by clicking one of the buttons below. For additional TrueOS images, including legacy desktop versions and files, click “Browse Downloads”.
Now I found this hint:
Lumina Desktop Build in FreeBSD / TrueOS - BSD Licensed Desktop Environment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHkP6BMgPt4

and this must be done as root

Code: Select all

dbus-uuidgen --ensure
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E88353_01/ht ... gen-1.html
Nice greetings
