I have an old computer I use daily running MS-DOS 6.22. I believe that was the last verson of DOS. Currently I'm trying to build a VM using my old computer, but have been unable to have the VM recognize my .VHD CD. Let's talk...

MS-DOS 6.22 was the last stand-alone version of DOS released by Microsoft. Later versions were produced and included as part of Windows 95/98/Me, but were never available on their own.

For early versions of DOS Microsoft and IBM worked hand-in-glove, but eventually they went their separate ways, and IBM also produced versions of DOS, though these were always more niche products than the Microsoft versions.

There are places on the Web where you can download these, but their legal status is uncertain. Microsoft is pretty laid-back about people using their very old products (they made the source code of the earliest versions publicly available a while ago) but they still hold the copyright.

FreeDOS, by contrast, is indeed truly free.
