FreeNAS & BTSync Plugin

Post by noodlenoggan »

VirtualBox 4.3.12 on a Win7 x64 PC
FreeNAS-9.2.1.5-RELEASE-x64 (80c1d35)
BTSync Plugin 1.3.94

Hi All,

Has anyone had success accessing BTSync running inside FreeNAS under VB?

My FreeNAS runs fine, by itself, as a VM under VB. I can create Apple and/or Windows shares and machines on my network can access those shares without any problems. When I install the latest BTSync Plugin, everything seems to install fine as far as what's inside FreeNAS but I can't access BTSync's web gui from any machine. I get a network timed out when I try to access the BTSync web gui url. FreeNAS still functions normally, regardless.

I created the same setup that was done in VB but this time in VMWare Workstation 10 and everything works fine.

Any suggestions/directions is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

If you left the network settings by default, then you're using the NAT mode, which blocks by default all incoming connections. Enable port forwarding and you're good to go.

I've since re-created a new freenas 9.2.1.16 vm and now a new problem arise. This time I can't even install ANY freenas plugins. About part way during the plugin installation, my motorola surfboard modem reboots. This process can be re-created each time I attempt to install any freenas plugins. On the same machine but using vmware, the modem does not reboot.

The link below are my modem logs from the reboot.

FreeNAS is not a supported OS, but if you provide the VM log file and the guest settings as described in Minimum information needed for assistance, we can see if something in your VM configuration is wrong.

On the same machine but using vmware
Problem may be the network driver used by vmware. Look and see if VirtualBox is using the vmware driver and if so I have seen this to be an issue.
I had to remove vmware before the network stabilized when using anything else.

Will get the VM logs and guest settings asap.

I tried removing vmware workstation...the problem didn't go away. Modem reboots about half way into installing the plugin in VB.

Setup wireshark and monitor the stream. I honestly don't know what VirtualBox would or could do to reboot the modem. It's actually using the hosts NIC with a miniport driver to hook into the stack.

Edit: to properly remove the NIC drivers you must do a cold boot, not a warm boot.

I've attached the vm logs/settings and modem log.

I installed a fresh copy of VB 4.3.12 r93733 and Freenas 9.2.16 on a different machine. Went through the entire process and the same results happened. I've posted a similar post on freenas's forum and was suggested that VB is the problem since when I do the same exact steps in VMWare Workstation 10, the installation completed successfully.

Thanks!

You may want to post a ticket at bugtracker.
Not sure how much attention is will receive as FreeNAS isn't really supported, but you never know.
