Darwin 8.0.1 x86 (guest) on Windows XP Host

Post by indranil_leo »

Hi,
Has anyone installed Darwin on VirtualBox on Windows XP host?
I have downloaded darwinx86-801.iso.gz and created .iso bootable CD image using ISO Recorder V2. I configured VirtualBox OS Type as "FreeBSD" and disabled all hardware. However, virtualbox crashes everytime when I try to start the VM.
If anyone has successfully, been able to install Darwin on VirtualBox, please help.
Thank you very much.

I don't actually recall seeing Darwin working on VBox... maybe I'm wrong, but as per this information: http://sites.google.com/a/puredarwin.or ... virtualbox I think it yet doesn't

Yes, I have tried but very long time ago. About two years ago on VBox 1.3.x. It did not work.

The link is dead. Could someone please repost these details so that others may boot Darwin in VirtualBox?

Wow! I was just looking at that project yesterday! ;)
Did you find a recent Darwin release that we could try? I found the other day a couple of references in the source code where they changed VirtualBox 5.2.2 to accommodate Darwin 6.0.2, so I guess that's as high as we can go. I'll take a closer look and see what I can dig...

You are confusing two things -- on the host side, 'Darwin' refers to the OS X kernel (see the output of 'uname -a' on a Mac). It has nothing to do with Darwin/OS X guests. The first change you listed really does refer to old Darwin guests though (old as in before there was OS X for Intel), the other two don't.

Anyway, if you want stuff straight from Apple, there is the following:

https://opensource.apple.com/static/iso ... 801.iso.gz
https://opensource.apple.com/static/iso ... 701.iso.gz
https://opensource.apple.com/static/iso ... 602.iso.gz
https://opensource.apple.com/static/iso ... 141.iso.gz

For booting Darwin 8.0.1 in VirtualBox, you need to pass the 'rd=disk1s2' argument. The VM also either needs to have no ACPI or must have an I/O APIC. For Darwin 6.0.2 it's 'rd=disk1'.

Thanks Michal, 1) for the clarification, 2) for the links and 3) for the startup options. Will try it later on...
