Not a single Android x86 works

Postby birdie » 30. Jun 2022, 18:32

I've downloaded these four images and none of them work:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
android-x86-8.1-r6.iso
android-x86_64-8.1-r6.iso
android-x86_64-8.1-r6-k49.iso
android-x86_64-9.0-r2.iso

Either surfaceflinger doesn't start at all or it crashes all the time when you just move the mouse around.

I've tried VboxVGA, VboxSVGA, VMSVGA with or without 3D acceleration, I tried various amounts of VRAM, nothing helps.

My VM is set to Linux Other x64, I've given it 4GB of RAM, 4 CPU cores and 8GB vdisk.

I'm using VirtualBox 6.1.34 under Linux.

:( :( :(

This is the best, tried the template from viewtopic.php?f=3&t=92683&start=15#p464073

Got
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
traps: USBDevIo--1[434674] general protection fault ip:7f49664e4b44 sp:7f49640ecd90 error:0 in VBoxDD.so[7f4966424000+170000]
as soon as the initial setup wizard appeared.

Please advise.

I cannot advise anything regarding the Android VMs, but:

On your host, do you use any of the Linux kernels that are not compatible with VirtualBox 6.1.34?

VirtualBox 6.1.34 and 6.1.97r150532 do not support Linux kernel 5.18 on the host and will produce random crashes in the guest (pun intended ;)). See 20914 and Windows 10 Guest on Linux host dies seconds after boot for details.

The VirtualBox test builds 6.1.35r151864 (and newer) are supposed to support Linux kernels 5.18, 5.17.12+, 5.15.44+, 5.10.119+ and more on the host and in the guest. Please report back if it solves the problem.

I'm using a mix of VirtualBox 6.1.34 with kernel modules from VirtualBox 6.1.35 test builds under Linux 5.18.

I will try again once 6.1.36 has been released but I don't think surfaceflinger crashes are caused by any incompatibilities - before it crashes and restarts, it's flickering heavily as if newer Android x86 releases require some GPU features not found in VirtualBox.

FWIW, I'm not sure if the necessary VirtualBox patches were only applied to the kernel module sources, but you might have a better understanding about that than me.
