Mac OS 12 / Monterey Beta Status

Post by nsfw »

Unsurprisingly, the current release seems to fail.

Using MS' OVA-formatted windows VM for VirtualBox starting VirtualBox results in a crash of the VM process (OS reports a crash) and VirtualBox handles this gracefully in the sense it does not die but cannot start the VM and presents its internal error code.

I assume this is just how it's going to be for a bit, but wanted to get the discussion started as I hadn't seen anything here on the topic and there are likely some workarounds, etc that maybe helpful as support grows.

Mac OS 12 / Monterey Beta Status

Post by Shoepy »

Similar problem with OS 12, I get the following error.

Code: Select all

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

Make sure the kernel module has been loaded successfully.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.

I managed to get past this error using the same procedures I use for installing on macOS 11 (Big Sur). However, I was unsuccessful in running a VM because the VirtualBox device drivers (kexts) cause a kernel panic. YMMV.

I have a preliminary document outlining the installation process on Big Sur, viewable at https://github.com/bryanc-nz/macos-virtualboxinstall

This is a brand new document and may have errors and omissions.

Monterey is in beta release so will have no real support from Oracle VirtualBox until the release of Monterey is finalised by Apple.

Monterey Beta 10 was released today and running a VirtualBox VM is still causing a kernel panic.

I do hope the devs are reading this forum and are aware of the issue. Monterey will be released sometime soon (i.e. in the next week or so) and VirtualBox 6.1.26 is unusable.

The devs don't read the forums much, but they do keep an eye out for new versions of supported host OS's. They're on top of Windows 11, chances are that Monterey will be covered too.

Try a test build. Save the test build installer until you update again later.

Better try VirtualBox 6.1.28... the test builds didn't contain any fixes.

Thank you @klaus

I am pleased to report that macOS Monterey RC (build 21A558) works well with VirtualBox 6.1.28, with no kernel panic. I had to jump through the Security & Privacy hoops a couple of times. The first installation was unsuccessful but the subsequent attempt worked. Apple could really have made this a lot easier for all concerned.

I am having the same issue but only from a headless start via terminal. Did you find a solution?

I'm getting this too. I can start the machine normally but I can't do headless or detachable without getting the NS_ERROR_FAILURE error.

I got this working by disable Gatekeeper, so that apps can be installed from "Anywhere".

$ sudo spctl --master-disable

You can see "Anywhere" as an option in the Security & Privacy control panel.

Now, reinstall virtualbox.

I was hopeful this would be the answer but unfortunately it hasn't helped for me. I can still only start the VM in normal mode. Headless and Detachable produce the same error as before. I've tried a few reinstalls and resets and get the same behaviour.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Headless and detached start was discussed here viewtopic.php?f=8&t=104259
and this is the ticket https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/20636
They wrote that it will be fixed in the next maintenance release of VirtualBox.

I just installed the 6.1.29 test build (mentioned here https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/20636) and it's fixed my headless issue. I can now start in headless mode on Monterey.
