I have installed VirtualBox-5.2.0_RC1-118201-Win together with its Extensions and Additions, the crackling sound problem and the sound delay when playing videos are both still there.

Finally got a chance to try 5.2 rc1. Hasn't crashed yet but sound is still a problem. I'll attach a sample of what I hear.

It's the Win 10 built in Text to Speach saying "Start", then "VB0DSLcu2 is ready"

Updated to VirtualBox-5.2.0_RC1-118223-Win with Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.2.0_RC1-118201 and VBoxGuestAdditions_5.2.0_RC1-118201.

There is significant improvement in the sound crackling (but not smooth yet) and the sound delay when playing videos is now very slight but noticeable.

Well, that seemed to do it. Smmmoooooth...

I'll assume that's what was causing the crashing too but will update if it does crash.
Thanks Man!

Installed VirtualBox-5.2.0_RC1-118249-Win. No improvement over VirtualBox-5.2.0_RC1-118223-Win on the sound quality and the delay is ever so slight but the video looks like skipping frames!!

I hate to spread some bad news, but I experience this sound problems too. I have two systems here. The first one is Windows 8 x64 host with Windows 7 x86 guest. The distortion appears here slightly on the 201, it gets worse on 249 and now it’s even went out of sound after little testing on 265 today.

That is how I test: I use the sound regulator on the tray, then the doorbell test sound in Control Panel → Sound → Playback Devices → Boxes → Extra and then I listen to the stream as I described it in ticket #16605. So the problems appeared last year (See my ticket #16190 for ex.) with a new sound back end, but then the back end was replaced with an old one. Now it’s sound the same (like a reverb or distortion effect, a sound of the peace of metal on the sound box or a car radio, when you move away from the station and signal quality is getting worse). But with 5.1 it was constantly presented. Now it’s in the beginning or the end of the small testing sound or just slightly presented in the stream playback. I got a feeling that the sound buffer is somehow a little bit slow.

As I wrote, the Windows 7 sound went out with 265 today, but thanks to the new settings, I could restart it without restarting the VM by turning the VM audio playback off and on in devices menu. One more note: when sound debugging is on, I have a VM crash with a message box about memory access only on this system at the end of the state saving process. Not on the other system.

Another system is Windows 10 x64 1703 with the latest updates as host and the guest. Here one can hear the hole distortion even more clear in all three version in any testing case. Here I got sporadically another problem. Sometimes if I pause the stream playback, the playback wouldn’t pause but start to play last 100 milliseconds over and over again, till I press stop or play. It can be randomly repeated. One time it made the whole guest non-responsible with a VM crash after one minute without any messages.

All files dumped by the audio debug are OK. I found the only one where the distortion is presented. So according to the description I have a host driver problems. The logs from both system and the sound file are attached. Tell me what else I can do to help correct this bug. It would be nice if we get not only modern but also working sound back end.

Updated to the latest VirtualBox-5.2.0_RC1-118302-Win, Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.2.0_RC1-118302 and VBoxGuestAdditions_5.2.0-118298.

The sound is still lagging video and quality is not good either. Furthermore, if you play a Youtube video the sound goes really bad every 3-4 minutes (like a sound mixed with white noise) for about 10 seconds and back again 3-4 minutes later etc... It gives the impression of two waves (the sound and something else) that sync for 10 seconds creating bad distortion then out of sync for 3-4 minutes creating the crackling, this phenomenon is repeated during the playing cycle of the video.

I can also confirm that the distortion, stuttering is still happening. It is a lot better and in fact I can no longer predict when it will occur but it still does a few times a day.

That's missing only all the crucial information -- what is the audio device emulated in the VM and what is the audio backend on the host.

I already gave that info together with log files of the Windows 7 installation in an earlier post on this thread.
However, I will update my previous post for all VMs.

I‘ve tested my VMs with 302 and 335. The differences: the stream playback sounds better. On the Windows 7 guest one have a clear sound, but every 90 seconds it gets worse for 10 seconds and then it would be fine once again for another 90 seconds. On the Windows 10 guest the stream playback is fine but the issue with a pause persists. And: with 335 I got the sound complete disappearance on the Windows 10 guest today, so I have had to turn it off and on again in the minibar. The problems with the test sounds are still the same. Simulated sound hardware on the both systems is Intel HD Audio. The real hardware of the Windows 8 host is,

High Definition Audio-Gerät
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0268&SUBSYS_1179FF66&REV_1000\4&1A28025E&0&0001

on the Windows 10 host is

Realtek High Definition Audio
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0269&SUBSYS_17AA21F6&REV_1002\4&D00657&0&0001

But you probably can see this in my log files.
