VirtualBox 5.1 RC1 ICH AC97 volume control is different
Because of the VERR_NO_MORE_HANDLES issue, I can't compare it to the betas, but the RC1 and the 5.0.24 handle the volume control very differently. The RC1 is almost mute at low volume settings, tested with Windows XP and Ubuntu 16.04 x64 live. Is this expected?

Yes, this is expected to be like that. We now also take the master volume control into account, which should make the volume control more fine grained, also with regards to amplifier settings in Linux guests.

With the guest volume control below 50%, the actual volume is very low. Below 20-30% nothing is audible. It doesn't appear normal to me.

Which guest mixer control within the XP guest did you use to change the volume? Can you please elaborate how you perceived the volume control before RC1 / with latest 5.0.x?

Re: VirtualBox 5.1 RC1 ICH AC97 volume control is different
I use the usual Master Volume control, with both Windows XP and Ubuntu 16.04. The actual volume is very low compared to 5.0.xx, using the same mixer setting (the setting is usually below 50-60%). The volume control doesn't appear to be linear, but logarithmic.

The actual volume control is made within the 30-70% Volume Master control range. Beyond that (the extremities) you get either mute or full volume.

I've just tested Ubuntu 16.04 x64 as host, with Ubuntu 16.04 x64 live. It's the same issue. Sources of sound: youtube via firefox and bb (the ascii demo)

I too see this but only when the host audio is throttled ( not 100% ). The audio seems to kick in at 20% and for me it does work linear up to 100%. I tested the with both AC97 and Intel-HD. As far as I can remember this is the way it has always worked with the exception of being able to use the Intel-HD audio that has been introduced recently. ( not sure if it is in the RC yet though ). Normally I leave the guest audio at 100% and use the host audio to adjust the main level as it works for what I do.
