[Win7 w/o SP1] VMM: openSUSE 13.2 boot failed on Windows

Post by Technologov »

Host: Win 7 x64 + BETA4. (same with BETA3)
Guest: openSUSE 13.2 64-bit (and also 32-bit) Kernel 3.16.x
Was working on host: Win 7 x64 + BETA2. (same PC; XRig)

Could it be related to AVX and XSAVE functionality ?

NOTE: openSUSE 13.2 32-bit guest works if I disable VT-x.
NOTE2: Not always reproducible.

Possibly related to bug : "Fedora Linux guest hangs on startup"
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=68045

NOTE: This is only sometimes reproducible only on Windows hosts; I was unable to reproduce this bug on Debian Linux 6 host. (if it's possible, maybe my VM settings on Linux hosts were different)

Unable to reproduce here with current trunk (yes, windows host).

PS. The xor module seems to be used by btrfs. If Fedora 22 is using btrfs or something else requring the xor module, yes, maybe it's related.

I still experience this bug with RC1.

Tried to re-install openSUSE 13.2 x64 : kernel crashed on "Loading kernel modules for hard disk controllers..."
Changing HDD controller from SATA to IDE didn't help.

Host: Windows 7 x64, v5.0-RC1

UPDATE:
VMX Nested Paging is to blame. Disabling Intel EPT did help. Was able to boot openSUSE guest !
Moreover, BETA2 doesn't suffer from this defect. Boots fine with EPT.

The question is: what was changed between BETA2 and BETA3/RC1 regarding to VMX/MMU/VT-x side of things? (only AVX ?)
Things stopped working since BETA3.

I can't reproduce the error with my Windows 8.1, OSX or Linux hosts. Could it be KDE? I am running Gnome with OpenSUSE 13.2.

loukingjr: I can't reproduce it with Linux hosts also. I think this is Windows hosts + Intel EPT issue.

Not related to KDE, because openSUSE kernel crashes on boot -and- even during install. Only Yast works during install, no KDE. Not related to disk controller either. And not to PV. I set PV = disabled.

You say you can't reproduce it on Windows 8.1 also ? Then no ideas.

No, not on WIndows 8.1. Maybe it's just with Windows 7. I don't have a Windows 7 host to check.

Update: my other host with Windows 7 x64 works fine.

Summary:
Host 1: (XRig) Intel Core i7 2600K + Windows 7 x64 - FAILs, hmm? (worked with BETA2 or with RC1+EPT disabled)
Host 2: (XRig) Intel Core i7 2600K + Debian Linux 6 - Works !
Host 3: (Portege) Intel Core i7 4600U + Windows 7 x64 - Works !
Host 4: (Dell) Intel Core i7 4510U + Windows 7 x64 - Works !
Host 5: (ASUS) Intel Core i3 2100 + Windows 7 x64 - Works !

interesting. I guess it's time to track down why one works and one doesn't.

If there is any test-build attempt to fix this, I'd be glad to know.

Problem still exists with RC2a.
