  • === Problems with Guest Additions ===
  • [Regression] Seamless mode on Windows 2000 guest broken. Worked with v4.1.6 host+guest. (link)
  • [Regression] 3D: Vista guests broken. Worked with v4.1.6 host+guest. OpenGL fails too.
  • [Regression] 3D: Windows 2000 guests broken. Worked with v4.1.6 host+guest.
  • [FIXED in BETA3] [Regression] Xorg: openSUSE 10.3 + KDE3 (which I need) has dynamic resolution resizing broken. Works with v4.3.26 GA.

  • Drag-n-Drop: File DnD failed for all Debian/KDE4 guests in both directions.
  • Drag-n-Drop: All RHEL/GNOME guests work only Host->Guest. Guest->Host doesn't work.
  • 3D acceleration: Aero has problems (here and here)
NOTE: because I have not tested VirtualBox 4.2 and 4.3 series deeply, I must cover their features also. V4.1.6 was last version to get deep tests from me.

Edit: removed the colors and weakened wording as this list is not representative

UPDATE: users are invited to this topic to say which features they covered.

Which worked, and make a list of what didn't work. The idea is a community effort to reduce duplicate work a bit, and improve test coverage.

UPDATED with BETA3.

Bridged mode networking on Windows is still broken here in BETA4, per this topic. I imagine it's not a super-high priority as most can get by with NAT, but I suspect that's less efficient. Nevertheless, if NDIS5 is being taken out (and I didn't even get the option to use it this time), it needs fixing.

NDIS5 isn't exactly being taken out, but NDIS5 causes problems on Windows 8.x that can't be fixed except by using NDIS6.

There will still be some option to use NDIS5 even on Vista+ but the expectation is that it should be very rarely needed. The problem with host-only networking is going to be fixed before the release.

See the Beta 4 user manual section 2.1.2:

Code: Select all

VirtualBox.exe -msiparams NETWORKTYPE=NDIS5

USB in Solaris hosts still a longstanding issue. A copy of my other post into this thread (to be clear, any time Solaris is mentioned here, it is as a VB host):

Big issue: USB. USB for VB guests quit working with Solaris 11.2, and even with 11.1 it worked only after Ram built a custom 64-bit only USB module for several of us. As of Solaris 11.2, even that module quit working.

On Beta4, it appears that I can attach a USB3 SATA dock as USB3 (and the client sees it as such), but it gets only USB2 performance. On the host, it clearly has USB3 throughput. Even worse is things like USB wireless adapters, whether USB2 or USB3, and no matter if I've enabled USB2 or 3 support in the guest settings. These adapters quit working for guests of Solaris 11.2 hosts even with Ram's 64-bit USB module, and never with the included vboxusb on the Solaris VB build. It used to be that when attaching a wireless adapter to a guest, the guest would use it merrily. I do this often for testing because I manage an enterprise wireless system, and use this for testing various wireless clients. Now (as of Solaris 11.2 and all current versions of VirtualBox,including Beta4) the adapter is seen by the guest maybe once. It never works, and either locks up the guest or simply disappears from the guest.

And yes, I've updated the extension module and the guest additions in all cases.

Lastly, I find chasing the bouncing toolbar in seamless mode aggravating. I move the mouse over it, it jumps up, and I have to move the mouse again to click the desired menu item. Unfortunately, about half the time the bar then goes back down. It's almost comical trying to pin it down sometimes.

With an Ubuntu-MATE 15.04 version (this is a relatively new officially supported Ubuntu release with window manager MATE), the additions CD will automount, but not autorun.

Mod edit: See detailed topic

Part of this has been finxed in the lates 4.3 test build so should work in next V5 too:

https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13358

I still experience graphics corruption and use the 4.2 drivers. Might be related to the other 3D and seamless problems also reported against 5.0

I wonder if it is even scheduled to get this fixed in VB 5. While I can not estimate the kind of effort this fix would require, if the fault goes to VB, it's worth giving a try as with out it, the Solaris Host scenario, tends to be non practical or even useless.

The USB breakage is most likely not our fault, as we're using Solaris kernel interfaces which have been created specifically for VirtualBox, and shouldn't be changing. Apparently they do...

Besides, I would assume that far more than 99.9% of the Solaris installs are safely locked away in some datacenter, i.e. there won't be ever USB devices attached to them, which means that the "Solaris as a workstation OS" use case is an extremely small number of users. We're not doing anything to sabotage them, but the extremely low number of users (to my very incomplete knowledge no VirtualBox customers with support) means that only an extremely low percentage of the dev resources can be spent on it.

Technologov, to avoid wasting your time: with RC2 there are still plenty of known issues in the Linux DnD functionality, but OSX should work now (an oversight, wasn't enabled in RC1). Better skip testing this area for Linux, you won't see any relevant change in behavior. The corresponding gigantic fixing effort is effectively finished, but missed the RC2 deadline. We'll create a test build once the code is integrated.

Thanks for update.
Then I ask to release RC3, as-soon-as-possible. As I wanna make the big guest-additions matrix test. I will need at least a weekend for tests.
(it can be just few days after RC2)
