[Fixed] Cancelling entering the VM password keeps it open

[the encryption password]

And the HDD controller icon in the status bar keeps glowing green.

Yes, it's "opened" :) , paused and expects you will try to enter password again.
Password will be acquired again if you will unpause (resume) VM.

That's not exactly intuitive.

If a person has forgotten their VM password I guess leaving the VM in a paused state is just ... useless. Besides it's not obvious that the VM is running. When you pause an actual VM you can easily see that it's paused since it has some visuals. A gray underscore isn't exactly readable ;-)

Anyways it's [for] you to decide but logically if I press "Cancel" the VM should be shut down completely.

Yes, we decided to make the GUI to propose the Close VM dialog in such case. Implemented.
