Aero crashes when previewing pics

Post by Marko73 »

Windows 7 x86 VM with 1GB RAM, drops out of Aero mode to basic mode every single time I preview any jpeg file in windows explorer (ie. double click it to open Windows Photo Viewer), sometimes accompanied by drawing errors in Photo Viewer. Win7 x64 Host, 4GB RAM, NVidia 8800GTS 512 graphics.

Reproduced the black screen issue here. Investigating it now. Unable to reproduce the crash so far. Marko73, does the crash still happen to you with Beta 3 ?

here you go...

while we're at it, is there any chance someone can look into why vbox is resetting to a standard resolution the next time I start this virtual machine if I shut it down with the window maximised? (not fullscreen). I posted about this a few days ago but haven't even had an acknowledgement of it, let alone a fix...

We have fixed the black screen issue, and hopefully the DWM crash as well. Please try the test build http://www.virtualbox.org/download/test ... tiArch.exe that includes the fix. Note that you need to update guest additions to make the fix work.
Let me know if you need a non-windows VBox test build.

Nope. Still broken. (4.1.1r73149)

Host: Win7 x64 + VBox 4.1.1r73149 + NVIDIA GTX 560 (NV266.44)
Guest: Win7 x64 + GA 4.1.1r73146

Now Windows 7 Photo Viewer renders the picture initially, but after fast cycling (pressing right arrow several times quickly), it renders only white pixels.

(in addition VM crash+reboot, if I run Windows Experience Test)

Is it a regression since 4.1 ?

Please give a try to the test build http://www.virtualbox.org/download/test ... tiArch.exe that should hopefully fix the crash you observed. Note that you need to update guest additions to make the fix work. The situation with the original preview pics issue should also be improved, however there are still some situation when the pict is not displayed properly, we are working on fixing it.
Let me know if you need a build for some other non-windows host platform.

This version is not exactly everything I was hoping for... I can't even start any of my virtual machines now - I get this error:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine (followed by the name of whatever VM I'm trying to start)

Failed to open/create the internal network 'HostInterfaceNetworking-Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller' (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).

Failed to attach the network LUN (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}

I tried a repair install of vbox as well - no change.

Marko73: looks network-related... try NAT instead.

Well, the VMs start with NAT, but NAT isn't any use to me for the things I use virtualbox for. All the VMs were running fine in bridged mode before I upgraded to this version. To add insult to injury, the aero crash with picture viewer is exactly the same as before.

edit: also just noticed on this update, win7 x86 now goes into a spontaneous reboot instead of shutting down cleanly when I try to power off the virtual machine.
