VB30b2 - Networking through put

Post by javaboyuk »

Guys,
I am new to VB, but 3.0b2 seems to allow Windows xp sp2, 32bit to run
a 64bit opensolaris 2009.6 better sofar no hangs with 100% cpu!

My question, obviously I used bridge net during install and patching
of guest (as NAT interfaces in 30b2 are broken) then added a host
only interface and took down the bridged one. This was because I am
running a storage server (ZFS to 5x 2TB RAW disks on a little cheap
array) with smb shares to my windows box so it can store data in zfs!

So my 2 questions:

1. have used SATA emulation for the RAW disk access I assume thats the most
efficent and will give me best disk performance? Are there any "features" or
things I should be aware of to optimes throughput to my real disks?

2. I am using host only interface for my smb shares, HOWEVER this seems to
be CPU limited. All I get is 19% of the 1GB interface. If i reduce the CPU
clock speed this drops off even more! So is there any parameters I can set
either in VM30b2 or opensolaris2009.6 that would improve this performance?
I have used the following:
Adapter 2: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (Host-only adapter, 'VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter')

Its working, I'd just like it to be faster, :) And I know I can only have 1CPU as I am runing 32 bit XP as host
but have no real coice as my array sata controller only comes in windows driver flavour :-(

Many thanks
