guest resolution 800x600 is max available Vbox beta 3.0

Post by wirechief »

VirtualBox 3.0.0 Beta1 R48728

I installed guest additions on the guest: Jaunty 64bit Desktop using x86_64
Guest:
Linux wirechief-laptop64 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Useing Devices to install VirtualBox guest addtions fails and locks the screen and i have to
terminate the session, i was able to mount the cdrom and run the VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run
see attachments: VBox.log , xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, and dmesg.txt for details.
The mouse integration seems to work except i am not able to copy and paste between the host
and guest or vice versa.

Host:
Debian Lenny, Kanotix 64 bit.
Host/Kernel/OS "Wirechiefs-64box" running Linux 2.6.30-8-generic x86_64 [ Kanotix Excalibur 20090530-15:04 ]

I am only able to see 800x600 , I am using 64mb video ram, 3d exceleration enabled. I am also
curious with the screen that says that i need 32bit for video screen when i first go to login , I am not able to set this with the System>Preferences>Display , additionally xrandr shows:
xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 64 x 64, current 800 x 600, maximum 32000 x 32000
VBOX1 connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
800x600 60.0*+
640x480 59.9
I have used Virtual Box 2.2.4 with 32bit guest and 32bit host without resolution issues with the same laptop Lenovo R61e.

I did my first update since installing from the Jaunty 9.04 Desktop.iso it brought with it a new kernel:
Linux wirechief-laptop64 2.6.28-13-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:55:09 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I re-installed guest additions and rebooted but it stuck with the ubuntu splash screen showing no movement indicating
progress, I rebooted again this time it got to the Desktop however the menu selections were frozen they were not clickable
I rebooted yet again, this time there were no apparent issues and now my screen is adjustable beyon 800x600
xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 64 x 64, current 1240 x 600, maximum 32000 x 32000
VBOX1 connected 1240x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1240x600 60.0*+
640x480 59.9
since i was focused on the progress bar I didnt notice a pop up warning about adjusting my screen depth to 32bit.
It appears the new kernel resolved the issue of resolution being maxed out at 800x600. The only screen issue was
when i tried to use the Machine drop down initially to resize the guest window the machine froze but a reboot of the
guest seems ok now. (very curious)

This is with a netbook isn't it! That or otherwise the screen is small

I experience the same issue with my Eee PC... It will also revert to 16 Colors.. my solution is too go in and out of full screen until the virtualBox resizing module kicks in and fixes it!

more information on the computer and its hardware: (it is not a netbook, its a Lenovo R61E)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I updated the kernel along with Jaunty updates this morning, I will include the /var/log/dpkg.log
so the updates applied can be reviewed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I lost the fix that seemed to resolve the resolution issue with VirtualBox Beta version 3 rc1,I upgraded to Virtual Box Beta version 3.0.0.0_BETA2 r49051, however they were lost either by the upgrade to 2.6.30 kernel or the updates that came this morning, typically
i apply updates first then install new kernels, unfortunately i did not test to see if my resolution was lost after the updates only after installing the new kernel, thats when the issure re-appeared.
I had to go through my dance with xorg.conf in order to bring sanity back to the desktop but even
with that the resolution returns to 800x600. The dance i had to do was rm xorg.conf and then
cp the xorg.conf.failsafe xorg.conf reboot and then for some reason it needs 3 reboots to finally reach a workable Desktop, the first boot the Ubuntu splash screen and progress bar remain on the left side and fail to move, on the second boot i reach a totally black screen (after logging in)
on the third boot it reachs the Desktop with 800x600 resolution. quite a dance i would say. I have core virtualization enabled in the bios so hardware virtualization is possible, i have it enabled along with nested paging and this is the first time in my experiementing with Vbox that 3 reboots were needed to get to a workable desktop. attachments. dmesg , Xorg.0.log, and all three VBox logs.
