VBOX 3 Beta gives me 22GHz from 2.2G CPU -> fixed already

Hi all,

I used the image from VBOX 2.2.4 which run fine. However when I migrated to VBOX 3 beta, the Windows XP guest will constantly take 100% usage of one of my core when set to 1 core in VBOX and 100% for both cores when set to 2 cores in VBOX. I also realized that the VBOX sees the processor frequency to be 20GHz and 40GHz on two cores basis. Screenshots and pictures are attached.

I think this might be the same problem that I am having. The symptoms looks the same. Tomorrow I will check the CPU speed in the guest machine.

I believe that you have installed a single processor kernel on your present copy of XP and to get it to work you will need to install the Multi-processor kernel. To tell you the truth if it were me I would just install again and let XP do the work for me. It can be a bear getting the right kernel installed unless you have done it a few times.

This afternoon I have tried the following:

- First, re-set the number of CPUs to 2 (I had previously set it back to 1 in order to limit the CPU usage in my dual-core host to 50%).
- Reinstall XP in my virtual machine.

The behavior is the same as before. The CPU of the virtual machine is not really busy, but VirtualBox.exe is using 100% of my dual-core host machine (so, both cores).

As a workaround, I have to set the guest back to 1 CPU (so, just 1 core is everytime at 100% usage, even when the virtual machine is idle).

Regards,

Jose.

Same thing applies to me as Jose.

- Windows SMP guests burn cpu cycles when idling (at least Windows XP SP2; fixed already)

I am on SP3.....

What do you mean by "fixed already"? Have you found a workaround? Is the solution in another thread?

Or you are just summarizing the problem?

Regards!

I found it from

And nop, the problem has not resolved yet here.

I don't think it would be possible for any operating system to have the set the frequency to either 20 GHz or 40 GHz. The number of CPUs under Windows XP guest on my PC is set at 1. I hoping that there would be a way for VirtualBox to adjust the priority to idle as I'm getting sick and tired of having to manually set it to idle.

Oh, now I see the update in the post that you mentioned. Thanks!

I hope a new beta will be released soon...

BTW, I just checked and when I set my guest Windows XP SP2 to 1 CPU, it reports:

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
T7300 @ 2.00GHz
35.35GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM

35.35GHz... I wish :)

That was fixed yesterday and will be in the next beta. Thanks for reporting.

Is there any workaround or expected release date for the next beta? This problem is very annoying. Thanks!
