The main problem here, is shared folder... it often fails.

Host: Windows XP, VBox 3.2.0-BETA2

1. Shared Folders: Vista/7 guests only. (32/64-bit) -- happens when you run normal user account. Works with Administrator account.
This bug existed in 3.1.0 too, but not fixed.
Many executables refuse to run fom Shared Folders:

This probably isn't a bug, it appears that the XP App compatibility stuff fails to work on non-local file executions.

windows file sharing is different to network drives, which Vbox sharing folders seems to be.

I think they are the same.
Windows fundamentally supports 3 types of storage: standard non-removable storage (IDE), removable storage (USB), and network file systems.
SMB and VboxFS both based on type 3: network file systems. The first 2 are block devices (and can be formatted), while 3rd is file system.

Anyway users are expecting everything to work.

It is a BUG yes, it had a similar situation with Windows 7 guests in version 6.0.10 but the bug was fixed. However, with Windows 10 guests the error still remains.
The previous error was in the VM Extension Pack.

Today, 10 years later, this problem still haunts us.

Moving the .exe from the shared folder to a local folder it executes.
