Errno 5 Trying to install Ubuntu 20.04

Post by TomL12953 »

When I try to install Ubuntu 20.04 in VB 6.1.10 on Windows 10, I get an errno 5 (input/output error) every time. I have tried recreating the hard drive and tried fixed size as well as dynamic. I have also tried with the Solid State Drive box checked and unchecked. No difference. The error occurs at a different place each time.

The virtual CD passes the initial test that Ubuntu does so it's probably a problem with the virtual hard drive. I use a SATA SSD for my physical hard drive and have run a diagnostic on it and have found no bad sectors.

Any tips?

Isn't the Hyper-V feature killed in the BIOS?

FYI: Errno 5 (Input/Output Error)

apo2 is likely on the right track. But to be sure:

Start the guest from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the guest from within the guest OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the guest with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Sorry, Dan, but this is not a good way to solve the OP's problem, even if it works.

Running Virtualbox as Administrator is dangerous. Virtualbox opens lots of holes in the security model of the host OS to enable running another OS on the same hardware while keeping everything separate. Malware on the host can use Virtualbox to get access to the host OS. If Virtualbox is also running as Admin that malware exposure is a lot bigger.

There are only two reasons to run Virtualbox as Admin on a Windows host:
1. when installing or uninstalling the Extension Pack.
2. when using Raw Disk Access.

In either case it is essential to have a clean host OS.
