Guest Additions 6.1.10 Black Screen with LinuxMint 18

Post by jimnms »

After updating to VirtualBox 6.1.10, booting my Mint 18 guest, everything was fine. I then installed the 6.1.10 guest additions and rebooted. I get to the login window, but after logging in, the screen just stays black and I never get to the desktop. I left it sitting for about 10 minutes. I didn't see any errors in the log, but until I forced it to shut down, the last line was:

Code: Select all

00:30:35.720271 Display::i_handleDisplayResize: uScreenId=0 pvVRAM=0000000000000000 w=800 h=600 bpp=0 cbLine=0x0 flags=0x2 origin=0,0
I'm able to log in to the console, uninstall guest additions 6.1.10, and re-install 6.1.8 and the guest works fine again.

Please provide a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 16.04.6! Attached is my VBoxLog.zip.

I should have mentioned that I have tried changing the controller to VBoxVGA and VBoxSVGA. When I did that, VirtualBox says "Invalid settings detected". So, I couldn't try those options.

Try increasing graphics RAM to the point where you stop getting the "invalid settings" warning. About 64MB should do it.

I have to say however that your PC seems inadequate to me for running two modern OS at the same time. Nowadays IMO you need at least 8GB RAM and 4 cores (not hyperthreads), as well as a huge hard drive of course.
