I've been having issues as well. One workaround that helped some of guests was to open up VB Preferences ([File]/[Preferences]), click on "Display" and set "Maximum Guest Screen Size" to "None." This helped a lot of my VMs except for CentOS-8... that one required changing from VMSVGA to VboxVGA.

I have 2 CentOS.
One with VMSVGA and it works, but with lots of coredumps
Second one had VMSVGA and it never worked, so I switched to VBoxVGA and it works partially. I can resize screen but cannot login, because it's just way too slow..!!!
So, what's up with this new update?

Tried with a brand new CentOS 8.1 guest. Same issue as many of us noted : broken Linux guest tools in 6.1.6, the display will not resize (automatically).
What worked for CentOS 8.1 for me:
  • use VBoxSVGA (without 3D acceleration) as being the display device
  • use Maximum guest size to None in the preferences
  • Do not maximize the guest window but resize it manually (whenever you maximize the display, it appears like it is frozen)
Another way to go it to downgrade the guest tools to 6.1.2

I hope they will release a fix soon. Linux guest stuff was buggy in 6.1.4 (broken clipboard) and still is in 6.1.6 (broken display). Those are basically why we use the guest tools

See Public Bugtraker: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/19496

It seems to be an already acknowledged issue, so add any new relevant/useful information there as constructively as possible. Otherwise you are just moaning to other users as the developers don't (and can't) monitor all Forum traffic.

Workaround:
For me a double Host-F fixes the problem:

(1) Host-F to leave fullscreen,
(2) followed by Host-F to view in fullscreen mode again.

Host = Linux Debian MATE 10.3 (buster)
Guest = Linux Debian MATE 11 (bullseye)
Graphics controller = VMSVGA (not 3D)

VBox.log gives always the message
GUI: UIMultiScreenLayout::update: GUI/AutomountGuestScreens is disabled

I didn't succeed to fix that fiddling with
VBoxManage setextradata GUI/AutomountGuestScreens true
or similar

The behavior has changed in 6.1.6
In the previous version, when the VM started in full screen the Fedora would switch to full-screen by itself, load, then present the login screen.
Since I moved to 6.1.6 and switched the guest to previous version, now it boots but doesn't go full screen.
I have to reduce/set again to full screen to see the Fedora inside switch to full screen.

I have checked the VB log and changing the window size does add lines to the log and it seems the values displayed are the good ones for the screen size.
But with latest guest editions, nothing happens while I see those lines in the log
And even going back it seems the behavior is not the same as previously.

Could this be because I have some file to delete somewhere in the Fedora ?

I am having this trouble, too. Tried with with Debian 10, Fedora 31, CentOS 8 and OpenSUSE. Screen doesn't resize any longer after upgrading to 6.1.6. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling guest additions multiple times to no avail.

Screen resizing does work with Ubuntu, but it starts up with the default screen size. I have to toggle full screen a couple times for it to resize into full screen. About to revert to version 6.1.4.

Have you tried Guest Additions 6.1.2? I installed that in my RHEL 8.1 virtual machine and finally everything appears to work (so far).

Hope someone fixes the 6.1.6 guest additions soon.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Guest - same problem with the latest additions. It's not OS-related. Same issues with Ubuntu 19.10.

Why haven't we heard from the team yet in this thread?

I am experiencing the same symptoms on Ubuntu (18.04). I use the VMSVGA Graphics Emulator with 3d Acceleration checked on. I took a snapshot of the machine with Guest Additions 6.1.0 prior to loading the latest Guest Additions 6.1.6. I just rolled back to my snapshot... and sure enough... the symptom goes away. This is def a bug in the Guest Additions 6.1.6 package.

Things are not getting better.

Today I installed the update for my Fedora 31 : switch to kernel 5.6
After installing 5.6.6-200.fc31 the virtual machine reboots, everything seems to work but... Gnome... doesn't start.

I download VirtualBox 6.1.6 which is "5.6 compatible" and update the VirtualBox + extensions
I try again to boot the Fedora 31 under kernel 5.6 : Gnome no longer starts
I switch back to the previous kernel, 5.5.17-200 and everything works again.

Doesn't seem that Fedora + 5.6 works properly on Virtual Box 6.1.6
Gonna report that to Fedora

Have you guys been able to boot that under Virtualbox 6.1.6 ?

@GilbouFR

I'm using Fedora 31 too. With the following setup:
  • VirtualBox 6.1.6 + extension pack
  • guest additions 6.1.6
  • kernel 5.6.6-200
  • VirtualBox display settings: VMSVGA + 3D acceleration enabled
I can get Gnome to start, but display resizing doesn't work initially. If I toggle out of full screen (Host-F), wait a couple of seconds and toggle back in to full screen, then I have a properly resized display.

It's not ideal, but at least it's usable.

Anyone who has been having problems in managing and resizing monitor(s) can try new guest additions iso image:
https://www.virtualbox.org/download/tes ... 137622.iso
Hopefully this behaves better for most desktop environments. Again to make it clear this is for X11 clients using vmsvga. Please no reports for guests using wayland in this thread.

While trying to reply avamk's message I have replaced it completely by mistake. He was basically asking if there are some threads for wayland guest with similar problem. Whiskyjack
