Cannot install Ubuntu on VB 6.1.4 with Win10 Host

Post by robflash »

I'm trying to setup a Ubuntu 18.04 vm with Virtual Box 6.1.4 on my Windows 10 laptop.

No matter what I do, the install fails/freezes at some point in the process. Been trying for almost 2 days now, and am starting to pull my hair out in frustration. I've combed through multiple forums and none of the suggested fixes work.

Settings I've tried with no effect:
- RAM allocation as high as 8gb
- Video Memory to max 128mb
- CPU on all possible settings
- Enable 3D acceleration on/off
- Fixed disk and dynamic disk up to 30gb allocation
- Attempted install of Ubuntu 19.10
- Graphics controller to VMSGA and all other options
- Para-virtualization Interface to default and non-default options
- Disabled Hyper-V in windows features.
- Disabled Virtual Machine Platform in windows features

I've also tried with multiple isos, all for which I verified the checksum.

Is there a known issue that I'm running into? Any ideas?

Provide a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

@cricel472:

There is no VirtualBox error recorded in the log you provided, and in fact you can see from the screenshot that the VM booted just fine into the Ubuntu installer, so sans read errors on the CD or hdd (not logged, so didn't happen) I don't see what other influence VirtualBox could have. I suggest that you ask about this on the Ubuntu forums site.

I am having the same issues with the installer crashing before the end. Has there been a solution posted yet?

This one took a little while to pin down, but the problem has been found now. Hyper-V is enabled. See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active).

cricel472's log has these lines in it:
{timestamp} HM: HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM: VT-x is not available
{timestamp} NEM: WHvCapabilityCodeHypervisorPresent is TRUE, so this might work...

which fits the above.

Anyone who stumbles on this topic, search your vbox.log for 'Attempting fall back to NEM'. If you find it, see the above link for the fix.
