I have been trying to install Ubuntu 19.10 on Virtualbox.
So far, I haven't managed to do. it. I've tried three times now.
I have a valid DVD with it on.
I can get Virtualbox to recognise the DVD and it starts installing, v e r y, v e r y slowly.
I have trouble getting it to change the keyboad, but it does it after a while.
I finally get to the screen asking to choose to format and install Ubuntu.
And there it stops. I get the little wheel turning, and nothing seems to happen. Task Manager says that the VB processes are taking CPU , but that's as far as it goes. I left it running overnight but that made no difference.
I am running Virtualbox version 6.0.14r133895.
Any ideas what's going on?

You've been on this site for several years now, yet I live in hope that one day you'll learn to provide a VM log when asking these questions.
Re: Can't install Ubuntu 19.10
Had to split the log file as it exceeded your 128Kb limit

Please ZIP your whole log. Then post the ZIPPED VBox.log...
And do not change the extension to .txt, that isn't part of the procedure...

Re: Can't install Ubuntu 19.10
The guest is a 64bit desktop OS with 1 core, 1GB RAM, and 16MB graphics RAM. Slow is to be expected with that spec. It certainly isn't off to a great start. And a 10GB hard drive too, so maybe 5GB usable.
I'd start again. 2GB RAM, 64MB graphics RAM, 2 cores, 32GB hard drive. Ideally located on an SSD if you intend to use this VM a lot.

Re: Can't install Ubuntu 19.10
I remember now that when I had to install Ubuntu 19.10 on not-my-main-Host (as a test), it would fail unless I had the RAM set to 3072 MB (3 GB). It's quite a beast actually and I wouldn't get any error messages, at all, just a black screen.mpack wrote:I'd start again. 2GB RAM
In fact, in their requirements page, they list 4096 MB (4 GB) of RAM...

Re: Can't install Ubuntu 19.10
4GB as the official minimum requirement seems a bit excessive. People accuse Windows of being bloated, but the official RAM requirement for Win10-64bit is only 2GB. Certainly the OPs PC can't easily afford to give 4GB to a VM.
Re: Can't install Ubuntu 19.10
I increased the memory to 4GB (4596MB) and it installed happily.

Re: Can't install Ubuntu 19.10
Well, be careful, because your log showed only 3GB available, which probably means that your host is overcommitted, unless you found a way to free up RAM. I would have tried 2GB first.
Also, that was not the only suggested change, the others were important too.
However since you reported the problem solved I'm mark the topic as such.

Tell me about it! I'm telling you that it came as a big surprise to me as well! That little bugger would refuse to install...mpack wrote:People accuse Windows of being bloated, but the official RAM requirement for Win10-64bit is only 2GB.
