Centos 7 x86_64 1908.iso

Post by ATrain »

Greetings

I am trying to install the latest centos 7 using virtual box on a windows 10 pro.
Every time I boot from the CD, i get the attached message.
VirtualBoxVM_MRZl7LlvIy.png
VirtualBoxVM_MRZl7LlvIy.png (36.38 KiB) Viewed 5392 times
This topic 90999 on this forum, mentions the same issue, and i have been through every step and still cannot launch the install.
If i change the iso to a debian install which is an amd64 install, when i start the host up, it starts to install.

I have attached the log file, and split it into two parts, so i could upload it. My machine is a dell xps 12 9380.

I have debian, unbutu and solaris install vm''s and they have all installed and work fine. It just seems to be centos.

Thanks in advance

Good on you for searching for a solution! Most don't bother, they just plop the question. Thumbs up!

FWIW, zipping the log and posting the zip file allows the whole log to fit in one upload. And:
when i start the guest up, it starts to install.
The 'host is the physical PC, the 'guest' is the Virtualbox VM. Just a little terminology.

You don't seem to have the Hyper-V issue that post 90999 had. From your log:
00:00:01.802002 HM: HMR3Init: VT-x w/ nested paging and unrestricted guest execution hw support
This means you're full open, theoretically no interference.

You do have your guest memory taking up all of your available host memory, though I doubt this is the cause of the above problem:
00:00:01.581850 Host RAM: 16129MB (15.7GB) total, 8304MB (8.1GB) available
00:00:01.801605 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000200400000 (8 594 128 896, 8 196 MB, 8.0 GB)
Try 4GB for now to be sure your guest will have room to load up, then expand when the guest is running well.

Video ram seems small:
00:00:01.801775 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000001000000 (16 777 216, 16 MB)
Try 128MB, unless you plan a headless guest.

Are you sure the ISO downloaded right?

Interesting the other poster in 90999 was also using the x86 Centos ISO. Might be a red herring...

You use the 64-bit ISO and it works. When I start a new guest and type 'centos' the New Guest Wizard chooses "Linux Red Hat (64-bit)" for the guest template. Did you try to change this choice?

I downloded this CentOS iso:
https://mirror.umd.edu/centos/7/isos/x8 ... D-1908.iso
The SHA256 hash matched. The install succeeded, and I get to a text login.

I installed this ISO using the New Guest Wizard's defaults when I typed 'centos' as the guest name. Attached is my .vbox file. You might be able to compare to see if any guest settings on my guest are different than yours.

Thank you scottgus1 for your quick reply, I have tried changing my values to your options and it still fails with the same error.
If i change the iso image to my debian iso debian-10.1.0-amd64-netinst, then restart the guest, then i get the start of the installation screen, go further and i get my options for keyboard, etc.

If i change back to the CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1908 iso, then it presents the kernel screen.

I have just manage to download CentOS-8-x86_64-1905-dvd1, and using the configuration that failed for centos previously, I am now able to install centos 8!

It strangely seems like this iso for CentOS 7, is not compatible with virtualbox, or something in my machine.

Do you wish to try to troubleshoot the Centos 7 problem more, or is 8 enough?
It sounds like Virtualbox itself is working, but there's some weirdness somewhere concerning that particular ISO, perhas in relation to your PC. If you would want to go further, I would suggest going to the Linux Guests subforum. I'm just a Windows guy, and this doesn't look like a Windows Hosts issue to me. The Linux gurus would be able to help you better.

Hi Scottgus1

I am downloading your iso and will verify it. I want to try to install centos 8, and agree i may have downloaded a corrupted iso, even though i downloaded it twice, it was from the same site.

I will try the new iso, and if it still fails, i think i will just leave this issue and goto centos 8, as this is only a test system.

Thank you for your help and response.
It has been truly appreciated.

One thing I did notice, your guest window's icon is a yellow foot, mine's a red hat. The yellow foot with nothing but a 64 in the corner means the "Other Linux (64-bit)" setting was chosen in the New Guest Wizard. That isn't the default for Centos. There's a difference between your guest setup & mine. Trying the install again with the Other Linux (64-bit) yellow foot...

The ISO installed just fine anyway with the yellow foot. So that's not it.

Hi Scottgus1

Tried the download from your post, verified the sha256 hash matched. All good, used the iso as my cd media, straight away, same issue.

Since i have managed to install cent os 8, i am going to just ignore this now.

Too puzzling to comprehend.

Well, if you had looked in the "Linux Guests" area (where this thread is getting moved) and not in the "Windows Hosts" area, you would have found "CentOS7.6 VM can't be created by VBox" and "kernel panic not syncing fatal exception when trying to start CentOS 7", both of them dealing with the exact same issue.

Which issue is unfortunately unresolved, it works for some, fails for others for no obvious reason. It needs I think some serious analysis to figure it out, and no one seems to have the time for that, especially if they're not personally affected...

I did not expect it to be an issue with the linux guest, as i have installed centos so many times under virtualbox, one thing i did notice when i installed centos8 was a warning referring to my processor the message in dmesg is "Warning: Intel Processor - this hardware has not undergone upstream testing.

Maybe this has something to do with why cent os 7.6 will not install on vm

But with your host? If it was an issue with your host, you'd have that problem with every guest. The problem appears on the guest, making it a guest issue. By definition... ;)
ATrain wrote:centos8 was a warning referring to my processor the message in dmesg is "Warning: Intel Processor - this hardware has not undergone upstream testing.
Again, this is a message from your CentOS guest, not something host related or VirtualBox related. And it's innocuous...

Absolutely nothing at all...

BTW, I just noticed that you posted your log in two parts. Please edit your post, delete the two parts, and post a ZIPPED version of the log. It helps you, it helps us, it helps the server, it helps save a (virtual) tree or two... ;)
