Using Alfa awus036ach wireless adapter with Kali guest

Post by VirtualMichael »

Hi,
I have been trying to connect the Alfa adapter to a Kali guest (2019.2) with realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms drivers.
The device connects briefly and then disconnects.
I see errors in dmesg
root@kali:~/rtl8812au# dmesg |tail
[ 1171.941815] usb 1-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 1171.941816] usb 1-2: Product: 802.11n NIC
[ 1171.941817] usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Realtek
[ 1171.941818] usb 1-2: SerialNumber: 123456
[ 1172.483738] usb 1-2: reset high-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
[ 1172.640000] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -32
[ 1172.878620] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -32
[ 1173.111116] usb 1-2: reset high-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
[ 1173.242887] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -32
[ 1174.110877] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 5
It sometimes stays connected long enough to appear in iwconfig.

I am running Version 6.0.12 r133076 (Qt5.6.2) with the same version extension pack.
I have tried using usb 2 and usb 3 controller in settings, with and without a filter.

The adaptor connects ok when Kali is running directly on the laptop with the same version of driver.

Are there any other settings I should change ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Please read the following thread: USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts.

If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice of the last post, #8: Asking for help and post the information requested.

More particularly I'd like to see if there's any correlation between the 'VBox.log' and the 'dmesg' output in the guest.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
