Can't install video drivers on Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint/CentOS

Postby razorjack » 21. Mar 2019, 10:33

I run VirtualBox 6.0.4 on MacOS 10.14.3 ( i7-8750H, Intel UHD 630, Radeon Pro 555X)
settings: VMSVGA, 32MB, 3D acceleration
i install VBox_GAs_6.0.4:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.18.0-16-generic
Copying additional installer modules ...
Installing additional modules ...
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel
modules.  This may take a while.
VirtualBox Guest Additions: To build modules for other installed kernels, run
VirtualBox Guest Additions:   /sbin/rcvboxadd quicksetup <version>
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Building the modules for kernel 4.18.0-10-generic.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.18.0-10-generic
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Running kernel modules will not be replaced until
the system is restarted
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Starting.

however after restart, UI is still sluggish ...
the same happens on CentOS and Mint.

On Mint in Driver Manager i can see:
InnoTek Systembeatung GmbH: VirtualBox Guest Service
This device is not working.
<both options with drivers disabled - i can't choose it>
* Continue using a manually installed driver
* Do not use the device

Revert / Apply Changes buttons are disabled.
and at the bottom of that window: No proprietary drivers are in use.

What's wrong? how to install these drivers and speed up UI ?

The title of your thread seems to be wrong, and I'm going to have to change it once I see the logs.

Pick a single VM. We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

00:00:09.580309 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 6.0.4 r128413 '6.0.4'
Your Guest Additions are just fine. You shouldn't have anything more to do from within the guest like setting up custom drivers or anything like that, not needed.

00:00:01.507873 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000002000000 (33 554 432, 32 MB)
You should however increase the RAM size. I usually max mine out...

PS. Just as I thought, your title is wrong. You *do* get the drivers installed just fine, it's simply that you don't like the result. Not sure what to rename it to, I'll leave it to you...
