security onion vm vdi size keeps going up fast, but actual size is normal

Post by vm_guy »

i'm running a security onion guest, it's a cyber security linux OS,

im not sure if anyone is familiar with it, but i thought id try here anyways

the vm's hard drive is at 11GB, which is normal and always stays at that size

but the vm's .vdi file keeps going up and up! the .vdi file is currently at 200gb! and it keeps going up and up!

i reinstalled the OS and still the same thing happens! not sure why

security onion is a linux operating system which scans the network for security problems for anyone that isn't familiar with it

anyone have any idea?

A VDI grows when a previously unused sector is written to. It has nothing to do with what the guest filesystem says. However the VDI drive cannot grow larger than the size of the drive selected at creation time, i.e. the number of unused sectors cannot be more than the total number of sectors on the drive.

It is normal for a new VM to grow fast when first created - practically every write is to a new sector. It should soon settle down to a natural size.
