Linux Mint 19 starts in software rendering mode

Post by JayC »

ModEdit: Original title of the thread was "Linux Mint 19 guest additions install fail"
Hi

I've just setup a new PC and installed Virtualbox 6.0.4 I want to play around with Linux so I setup a VM and installed Linux Mint 19.1 but I'm having problems installed the guest additions. The install doesn't fail or give any error messages, but when I restart it still has the message about being in software rendering mode. When I open driver manager it says virtualbox guest service is not working. I've checked online and found a command to run dpkg -l | grep virtualbox, when I do that I see an error saying 'vboxguest: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel'

I haven't got a clue about linux I've literally just set this up to learn about it so I don't how to get past this. Has anyone else at this problem, it's very frustrating.

We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

And please post an output of the GAs installation.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Thanks for the quick reply, I've attached the log file as requested. As I said previously there are no error messages or anything out of the ordinary happening when I install the guest additons. It's only when I restart the vm that I noticed it's not loading them.

The additions load just fine, why you say they don't?

Because when I start the vm it says it's in software rendering mode. And as I stated in my original post when I open driver manager it says virtualbox guest service is not working. So something can't be right. I'll take a screenshot later when I get home and attach it.

You have the VMSVGA GPU now. Try changing the GPU to VBoxVGA.

I changed it to svga as a test but it wouldn't even load the cinnamon desktop with that setting, so I've set it back to VBoxVGA which was the original setting and still doesn't work.

Found it. You have a hardening problem with your video drivers. Please read really carefully the following FAQ: Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues to understand the reason.

Here's what my start section looks like:
00:00:01.232152 Changing the VM state from 'CREATED' to 'POWERING_ON'
00:00:01.233761 VMSVGA3d: OpenGL version: 2.1 ATI-1.42.15
00:00:01.233763 VMSVGA3d: OpenGL Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
00:00:01.233764 VMSVGA3d: OpenGL Renderer: AMD Radeon R9 M370X OpenGL Engine
00:00:01.233764 VMSVGA3d: OpenGL shader language version: 1.20
00:00:01.233943 VMSVGA3d: OpenGL extensions (156):
And here's how yours looks like:
00:00:02.392728 Changing the VM state from 'CREATED' to 'POWERING_ON'
00:00:02.422944 supR3HardenedErrorV: supR3HardenedScreenImage/LdrLoadDll:
	rc=VERR_CR_PKCS7_KEY_USAGE_MISMATCH fImage=1 fProtect=0x0 fAccess=0x0
	\Device\HarddiskVolume4\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.
inf_amd64_5601d21ccd639df9\nvldumdx.dll: WinVerifyTrust failed with hrc=CERT_E_CHAINING on
	'\Device\HarddiskVolume4\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.
	inf_amd64_5601d21ccd639df9\nvldumdx.dll'
00:00:02.423025 supR3HardenedErrorV: supR3HardenedMonitor_LdrLoadDll: rejecting
	'C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_5601d21ccd639df9\nvldumdx.dll'
	(C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_5601d21ccd639df9\nvldumdx.dll): rcNt=0xc0000190
You need to update your drivers.

PS. I changed the name of the thread from "Linux Mint 19 guest additions install fail". Your diagnosis estimate at the beginning was making me look at the wrong places.
